real travertine or travertine-look

New build. Modern. Thin white bricks (one in photo) are front facade and surround two small to medium size entry porches. Should we choose Travertine (three samples shown here - left to right Sienna, Classic, then Country) Or should we choose travertine look for easier maintenance? The window frames etc are black and roof is monument.

It's porous, so depends whether you want to regularly seal it for as long as it's there and/or are OK with a lived in look with stains. If not, go for travertine-look porcelain tiles.

we were looking at real travertine but decided against it as it would be so hard to keep clean.
We were advised that we could.have all of the holes and imperfections filled but it would have been a very expensive process.

tannietara- Any stone (bluestone slate), travertine, brick, or concrete will get hot in the sun because of the thermal mass capacity of these dense materials. If you do use these them, you should consider lighter colors as they will reflect more of the solar radiation striking them, rather than absorbing it as will darker colors. Travertine may have the edge here, and by its nature is less dense than bluestone slate. You might also consider separating bluestone pavers with intermediate grids of turf (best), pea gravel, or decomposed granite which will break up the mass of the stone and help allow the stone pavers to cool. Hi mluh You've obviously done your research on these products, so it's most likely going to come down to personal preference. As you've mentioned, a natural stone is going to come with an amount of maintenance but the beauty of Travertine is within its variation. Once sealed with a good quality sealer (I recommend Guard Industry), the maintenance is really quite low and most spills are lost within those natural variations. 99% of spills can be cleaned up without too much trouble. Porcelain, on the other hand, can be quite difficult to clean once it's been marked. That said, the external porcelains have a great non-slip texture and are very hardy when used as paving/tiles. I'm personally not a fan of using them as pool coping, but many people love it. Again, both have their advantages and disadvantages so I would recommend using the product that you're happy looking at for the next 10-20 years. - Jordan

Our understanding is that travertine is quite porous meaning it will absorb stains so you'd need to make sure it's installed with a good sealant (even then they're not totally impervious). I'd recommend talking to the manufacturer/installers and finding out what sealants they'd recommend and if you need to re-coat over it's lifetime. Also, ask for some samples and do your own tests at home. Test it with scratching and stains that you'd likely have in your home. We regularly do this on materials in our office and find it to be a very worthwhile experiment.

I am no expert but I don't think they will work together. To me they are two different styles and if you use both it will look like a compromise of two clashing styles. I think you need to fully embrace the rustic or the vertical, use one of those as your feature and build around it. Question is; which one? Flip a coin?

We went for a “travertine look” tile. Attached is a pic of the tile and the tiles laid. We had it laid in a one third offset pattern (against advice) and we’re really happy with how it looks. The house is t finished yet so couldn’t get a good picture.

Our builder said that it isn’t done with square tiles (600 x 600) and the tiler said it was old fashioned! But we stuck to our guns and I’m glad we did.
