Wood floors in bathroom

Wanna put tongue and groove wood in my bathroom. Worried about effects of water getting in between cracks and causing damage. Thoughts?

Go w/ vinyl plank. No one can tell the difference (unless they are kneeling before the throne, in which case they are probably not focusing on your floors!)

Id be really really careful.
As mfwolfe said "Check the warranty"

Timber will absorb as well as breath and move a little.
Make sure its sealed extremely well

Hi Colin Lund Wooden floors look great but I would not recommend timber floors in a wet area such as a bathroom unless you are prepared for the constant extra care and maintenance they will require. If you want the warmth of natural timber you could include in some other features in the bathroom such as vanity cabinets or a mirror frame etc.. alternatively there are some great 'timber' looking floor tiles which give you the timber look without the maintenance heartache. It’s very popular & quite ok as long as you seal the wood with something like a Feast Watson marine grade timber polyurethane, especially the raw edges of the cutout for your semi recessed basin (will need silicone around here as well).

Mid century modern...there are just so many wonderful bathroom tile/vanities out there. You could incorporate a vanity in the same wood stain as your wooden floor. With a wonderful coloured or patterned tile.

Hardwood floors and water are not friends. You can damage the floor with exposure to water (even just on the surface, it doesn't have to seep down in the grooves) and with excessive humidity levels. These two scenarios are more likely to happen in a bathroom than other rooms in the home. You may want to investigate a luxury vinyl plank, a floor that is made of vinyl, looks like hardwood, and is quite durable and will perform much better in a bathroom application. Another nice option is a porcelain or ceramic tile made to look like wood, they are also very durable.

Hardwood is not recommended in a Bathroom, however you could use laminate flooring, Most pro's will not however guarantee these types of installs vs. Tile or other bathroom materials.

Powder rooms however are less prone to water spillage or humidity like that of a bathroom so installing hardwood in a powder room would not be an issue.

How about ceramic tile that looks like wood? Try this - we have used this before and it is really nice!

Nice picture! I'm not dying to have wood in the powder room but I was thinking that since the hardwoods are going to be installed right next to it, I might as well have them put it in there. It's a brand new house so I have my option of hardwood, tile or laminate. Not the ceramic wood. Tile would be my best option probably but I'm not a fan of grout on the floors. It's not easy to keep clean. I just may go with laminate that looks like tile :-(

Listen to the experts and don't do it. I have seen so many of these ripped out. They never hold up well.

Aw darn. Well, they know what they're talking about so I won't get it. I was thinking it's just a sink and a toilet in there and it shouldn't be a problem. I'll go with vinyl. I made an error up there when I said I would go with a laminate. They don't offer that and I don't want it anyway. I'll choose a vinyl floor that looks the most real, like with a large square pattern and a medium neutral color. It will be cheaper too!

I think someone said that up there somewhere? I heard that it looks just like wood. I think that is more expensive but I will look into it. We go today to pick out the materials for our new home! Excited but worried I will make mistakes :-O

If you really want a true tile floor but are concerned about grout upkeep I have a few suggestions to offer you. You can consider using an epoxy grout which is not as absorbent as a traditional sanded grout. It will still need to be scrubbed once in a while, but will not require any sealing like a traditional sanded grout. It's pretty easy to restore an epoxy to its original color even if it gets pretty grungy. A larger tile will require less grout, thus less grout maintenance. Lastly, a darker grout color will better disguise dirty grout in between cleanings.

Very helpful, yes. I will see if it's an option for us to get epoxy grout, and also a darker color. Boy I'm tired of getting on my hands and knees using the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on grout! I really do love large squared tile, so thanks!

Laminate is NOT good idea for bathroom..

Friend insisted on installing this for us...which he did for free...however several leaks around toilet from crack in toilet base, has required replacement of entire floor...was not a cheap repair..

Well, I'm probably getting a reputation for being contrary but I would encourage you to go ahead and continue your hardwood on in to the powder room. We did this in our home about ten years ago when we replaced carpeting and a pocket door there. We have had absolutely no problems. In fact, we just installed engineered hardwood in a hall bath on the upper level just a few months ago. I do need to say (since I've already posted this a couple of times and have gotten some negative feedback) that no children use the upstairs bathroom and when I use it I have a fan in the shower and I usually leave the door open since it's just my husband and me living in the house now. And, we live in a dry climate. So, consider those things. But I think you should do the wood in your powder room. BTW I think those porcelain tiles don't look a bit like wood and would look ridiculous next to real hardwood. Would anyone be fooled? I don't think so. Go for it.

There is NOTHING wrong with hardwood in a powder room, unless you live with heathens. You will tinkle and wash your hands. It is the material used in virtually every high end build in the USA....in the POWDER ROOM. Just do it.

As to a bath with a shower and more extensive wet use, that is up to you and the care you are willing to exercise, the ability to control humidity, and other factors...such as in a disaster, can you afford to replace it. The reasons of course that most baths, even luxury baths.....are tiled floors.

I agree with Jan Moyer on the Powder Room hardwood floor comment. We restored our Powder room maple floors, that were hidden under 3 layers of vinyl, and they are gorgeous. Seeing there is very little in the way of excess moisture in a 1/2 bath, they have been a breeze to take care of.

Am currently in the process of doing the same in the Master bath. That may be a whole new ballgame! I am willing to take the risk however, because I am on a budget and the maple floor is 120 yr old Birds Eye

. Can't imagine not even trying to salvage it. Fortunately, there are just the 2 of us, and since we are doing the work ourselves, we'll be more diligent about it's care. If the kids were little & at home. Not in a heartbeat. I will be looking into Water resistant bamboo rugs as Houzz suggested in another post.

We had wood in our bathrooms for ten years with no issues. Kids and dogs and an overflowing toilet did not hut them. They did have a polyurethane finish which was fabulous. Hope this helps

i'm almost positive that the picture referenced in the original post is in fact vinyl plank flooring. allure is a vinyl product.

also, its great stuff. i've got it in my basement and love it.
