Comments (4)I see. If you want more space, then adding on might make some sense, but, if you are just trying to improve the view, here are some general strategies you might try: 1. Make it invisible. Try using camouflage (planting things in front of it) or making it visually quieter (paint the blue door and the light colored trim a darker color more similar in value to the brick) or make the porch railing less transparent. 2. Make something else more interesting. Try planting something else nearby that demands attention (e.g. a hot pink shrub?) or putting something interesting to look at on the upper deck in front of the railing or hanging from the roof above it. 3. A combination of 1 and 2: if the brick really bothers you, have a screen designed that conceals it from the primary viewing location and plant something against that. Good luck with it!...See MoreNeed help to choose balustrades for the new deck, on my post war home
Comments (8)Well I know you want to be true to the house & reuse what you can but I would probably go with a more modern style like the stainless wire and timber top rail rather than dowels or timber for the infill. Be mindful of building code for the infill as horizontal is climbable and has to be very close together. There is so much upkeep in timber & if you go with the vertical metal rod look with the timber top plate maybe...? I am not an expert on any era or style though I know you will have a preference in mind & I would go with that. Look at the big picture of how your house will look with a change of paint (are you painting the house?) & for me it was about making the 25 year old house more contemporary. We love it!...See MoreDeck and storage – need some advice please
Comments (30)Great job Della and oklouise. Blends perfectly with the original design and the view from the top is to die for. Hope you will get nice cooling breezes there in summer too. I confess, I've never head of a moon gate :):) but it is a great idea....See MoreStreet appeal- exterior chamfer board query
Comments (5)Thanks @siriuskey. We had the same thought, but our builder said the frame style moulding is for interior use only and would perish in 2-5 years in the full sun on the front of the house. Perhaps there is moulding that is suitable for outdoor use... I do like the look. One of our neighbours has done it (blue-grey paint, white window frames) and it looks good. We have done the kitchen window in the back as an experiment; it is undercover and out of the sun though. I like the grey idea, but our neighbour's house is shades of grey (not like the book ;) and we didn't want to be too matchy-matchy. We might have another think about the paint... thank you for your comments. :)...See Moredreamer
