I too enjoy how well old and modern look together. Here is our turn-of-the-last century kitchen cupboard that the dealer told us would very likely have been knocked together with a hammer and nails by a farmer as a gift for his wife. When we made the move from a classic designed home to our modern newly built one, there was no way we would part with it. To ease the transition in the new kitchen, I swapped out my collection of antique plates and cups & saucers for some crystal and ruby glasses.

Another piece is this old cedar dresser which we use to store our winter woollies. It cried out to be placed at the end of a hallway, under this painting.

A great article - I am saddened by the demise of 'brown' furniture in favour of stuff that requires an Allen key. Your article shows that a beautiful modern home need not be a pedestrian cookie cutter image of what is now considered to be stylish. I have lots of pieces from my grandparents alongside modern furniture. I say hang on to those old beautiful pieces, the tide will eventually turn!

I love mixing old furniture with contemporary interiors. When we moved from a large 1920's Arts and Crafts house to a modern home many friends commented that I would need to sell all my old furniture. No way! it adds character and atmosphere to my new modern decor. For example, this walnut Arts and Crafts sideboard and brass candlesticks from about 1820 which sit alongside a modern oak dining table and upholstered chairs.
