Room of the Week: An Expansive Coastal Kitchen's Bright Rebirth
Existing arches led to modern Spanish elements in this beachy kitchen in WA
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
The kitchen before it was relocated and renovated
Brief
The client’s family has long been involved in the retail appliance business in WA, so she had a natural passion for beautiful kitchens as the feature of a home. She wanted a very practical space, which would also bring her joy and wow her guests.
Appliances were to be of a superior quality but hidden, where possible, to preserve a furniture-style aesthetic.

Starting point
The house already had striking arched features on the front facade, which led the design down a path of a modern Spanish home. A classic coastal vibe also influenced the materials
palette.

Why do you think this space works?
This expansive space, with a tantalising view to the Indian Ocean, was created as part of a full overhaul of a house built late last century. The rooms were reconfigured throughout the house to suit a more contemporary style of living and to make the most of the views.

White joinery, timber flooring and feature timber cabinetry create a natural and airy palette appropriate in the coastal location. Feature stone adds sophistication and pattern, while stainless steel benchtops are fit-for-purpose in a family home with a reputation for entertaining.
I’ll also let our client answer: “Our vision for our dream home was to create a kitchen that is the heart of the home. The fact we achieved this – and get to see the ocean in its varying beauty at most meals and watch the sunsets over the Indian ocean while cooking family dinners – is something we pinch ourselves over daily”.
