Color and interest abound in this corner of the yard. It is located at the edge of a riverbank where the sun and wind can be intense. Tough drought and wind resistant plants are essential. Road side favorites like Queen Ann's Lace, Coreopsis and Daylillies thrive in this environment. This garden is also planted with spring flowering bulbs that come up first. These summer perennials come up second giving the garden two full seasons of riotous color.

It all started with a surfboard. A couple of years hand gone by since my repeat customer called us to remodel their fifth house. It was a small little dingy beach bungalow on the Gulf of Mexico. The customer handed me a surfboard and said "make this into an outdoor shower" and on went my creative hat.

We used the existing builders rubble as an infertile planting substrate for plants that will thrive in a low fertility medium, are happy in an exposed location, and enjoy the sharp drainage afforded by the material.
An informal, naturalistic design was created that links the house and garden to the wider natural landscape of the Cowal peninsula and Isle of Bute. Paths meander through the garden mirroring the rolling mountains and ebbing and flowing of the sea. The planting is inspired by the forms, style and subdued tones of the mountains, moors and coastline of the west of Scotland.
Large boulders and smaller rocks were ‘planted’ into the sloped garden to add height and interest, to add to the naturalistic feel, and offer planting pockets for alpine plants.
Gravel mulch was used to dress the builders rubble, retain water in this exposed location and suppress weeds to help create an attractive but lower maintenance garden.

This enviable property sits perched on the bluff directly across from the ocean in the La Selva Beach neighborhood of Aptos. Project goals included overall beautification via plants with year-round color and showy blooms, more privacy on the patio and deck, and a way to deter frequent dog-walkers from cutting through the garden. We accomplished this last goal by building up soil mounds behind retaining walls and using taller plants at the apex. Privacy for the deck was achieved by the addition of sleek stucco walls. Project features a large swath of a walkable, drought-tolerant grass alternative. Special care was devoted to selecting plants that can withstand the wind, fog and salt-spray that occur near the ocean. South African and Australian plants figure prominently into the plant palette and create a vibrant complimentary color scheme against the ocean backdrop. Who wouldn't want to spend time in this ocean-view garden?

"Built in 1920 as a summer cottage-by-the-sea, this classic, north Laguna cottage long outlived its original owners. Now, refreshed and restored, the home echos with the soul of the early 20th century, while giving its surf-focused family the essence of 21st century modern living.
Timeless textures of cedar shingles and wood windows frame the modern interior, itself accented with steel, stone, and sunlight. The best of yesterday and the sensibility of today brought together thoughtfully in a good marriage."
