This blank canvas space in a new build in London's Olympic park had a bespoke transformation without digging down into soil. The entire design sits on a suspended patio above a carpark and includes bespoke features like a pergola, seating, bug hotel, irrigated planters and green climbers. The garden is a haven for a young family who love to bring their natural finds back home after walks.

MALVERN | WATTLE HOUSE Front garden Design | Stone Masonry Restoration | Colour selection The client brief was to design a new fence and entrance including garden, restoration of the façade including verandah of this old beauty. This gorgeous 115 year old, villa required extensive renovation to the façade, timberwork and verandah. Withing this design our client wanted a new, very generous entrance where she could greet her broad circle of friends and family. Our client requested a modern take on the ‘old’ and she wanted every plant she has ever loved, in her new garden, as this was to be her last move. Jill is an avid gardener at age 82, she maintains her own garden and each plant has special memories and she wanted a garden that represented her many gardens in the past, plants from friends and plants that prompted wonderful stories. In fact, a true ‘memory garden’. The garden is peppered with deciduous trees, perennial plants that give texture and interest, annuals and plants that flower throughout the seasons. We were given free rein to select colours and finishes for the colour palette and hardscaping. However, one constraint was that Jill wanted to retain the terrazzo on the front verandah. Whilst on a site visit we found the original slate from the verandah in the back garden holding up the raised vegetable garden. We re-purposed this and used them as steppers in the front garden. To enhance the design and to encourage bees and birds into the garden we included a spun copper dish from Mallee Design. A garden that we have had the very great pleasure to design and bring to life. Dentro de la jardinería de nuestro territorio, el Jardín Mediterráneo es sin duda el estilo más adecuado ecológica y edafoclimáticamente hablando. Tal es su idoneidad, que asentó las bases para otras variantes, como por ejemplo la contundente Xerojardinería californiana: este nuevo concepto de jardinería se caracteriza por hacer un uso eficiente del agua, pues tiene origen en un movimiento social de concienciación e investigación en los Estados Unidos como consecuencia de una grave sequía que asoló California en 1977. Aunque cada estilo tiene una filosofía independiente, comparten ideología y normas básicas cuando indagas en profundidad. Los principios básicos de la Xerojardinería pueden recogerse en siete apartados fundamentales: planificación y diseño adecuados (haciendo hincapié en la definición de hidrozonas y de un mínimo de áreas sombreadas), sustrato adecuado, correcta selección de plantas, practicidad en las zonas de césped, sistemas eficientes de riego, uso de mulching y mantenimiento adecuado. A parte, las características diferenciadoras del Jardín Mediterráneo, es decir, sus fundamentos, quedan definidos por siete bloques: nivelación estricta del terreno, plantación bajo el nivel del suelo, creación de grandes zonas de sombra, empleo del arbusto, utilización de plantas autóctonas y naturalizadas, tratamiento del agua y diferenciación entre el jardín y el medio exterior. Habitualmente se tiene la concepción de que estas tipologías de jardines no tienen tanta presencia estética comparados con el estilo paisajista inglés, lo que no hace más que evidenciar una grave carencia en cuanto a cultura botánica de los países mediterráneos, puesto que contamos con la mayor biodiversidad vegetal de toda Europa aún por explotar. Debemos aprender a disfrutar de los cambios estacionales de nuestras praderas e interiorizar que un uso restrictivo del agua no implica renunciar al color o las texturas y reconocer nuestros verdes.

Proyecto de paisajismo en zona rustica de Guadalajara, se intenta integrar las texturas del paisaje que rodea la Finca dentro del jardín, para ello se componen parterres de aromáticas y gramíneas. Composición de bajo mantenimiento, y gran valor ornamental.

THE LEMON TREE TRUST GARDEN A garden inspired by the resilience, determination and ingenuity of refugees living in Domiz camp in Northern Iraq, was unveiled at the 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The Lemon Tree Trust garden, designed with the input of refugees, highlighted the unexpected beauty hidden in the camp. The garden was designed to be used as a space to begin to organise the chaos inherent in forced migration, while also providing a sense of normality, wellbeing, peace and civility to broken lives. Beautiful yet drought tolerant planting educated visitors about the type of plants refugees grow in the camp. Ingenious vertical planting, inspired by refugees’ use of everyday objects, and including input from refugees themselves, provided ideas for planting in limited spaces. Trees laden with fruit, including figs, lemons and pomegranates, provided scent and crops to harvest. Brutal, harsh materials, such as concrete and steel, widely available in the camps, were elevated with techniques such as polishing, casting and crafting into patterns and intricate Islamic inspired designs. Colourful and textural planting softened the hard materials. Cooling and calming water flowed throughout the space, collected in channels and pools, recycled and pumped back through the brimming central Islamic inspired fountain, representing the importance of grey water reuse and the many makeshift fountains refugees have built in their own gardens in Domiz camp. Tom Massey progressed to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, with a 10x13m Main Avenue garden, after two successful show gardens at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The garden was built by award winning contractor Landscape Associates and was awarded an RHS Silver-Gilt medal. The challenges in this project was to work with the existing 3m level difference in the front yard and keep the existing treelines already in place, with a heavy emphasis on preserving the large gleditsia tree which was protected by local regulations. We designed in an outdoor seating area where the clients can relax in whilst watching the children play. This is further complimented by a grassed area where they can picnic and rest under their beloved gleditsia. Whilst it is a largely cottage garden, this was balanced with introducing some low maintenance evergreen plants. The clients loved edibles so the plant palette also built in some edible groundcovers, shrubs and dwarf fruit trees. The flora selected compliments the existing blue and white cottage weatherboard build elements and colours. The design also squeezed in extra parking and driveway space! When I designed this project I immediately thought of playing with curves which is a design element I love playing with. I love the way the new levels came together along with the retained garden beds and grassed area. I used soft pastels (yellows, pinks) to compliment the blues and purples in the planting palette and love the client's choice of the curved steel arbour and subtle glass detail. One cheeky aspect of the project was surreptitiously building in a plant, felicia, as a soft reference to the little master in the house! As usual I used a heavy contrast with some of the materials chosen to set off the plants nicely whilst also celebrating each material selected.
