This seaside castle has everything including a fabulous garden. With limited space available, we dug into the ground to create a veggie garden that would enhance the natural beauty of the surrounding estate. By positioning the garden hillside we were able to help prevent run off problems as well stay within a confined space. A tidy garden tucked into the hillside, perfection!

Client had just completed a beautiful deck, challenge was how to use the space under the deck and how to connect the front yard with the back yard as it was a 9' elevation change. The solution was to build a natural bluestone patio under deck with large natural bluestone steps connecting the front yard to the new patio. The plantings softening all the hardscape, adding color and texture. The lighting created a warm attractive room that was comfortable to access and use.

Raised cedar beds along the Sakonnet River, surrounded by in-ground planting beds, enclosed by a perennial border. A blueberry hedge buffers coastal breezes, while a gravel sitting area offers water views from within the garden. Jeremy Brodeur

In the past this house had been at the heart of a busy farm. The function of the property has long since changed but it yet remains someone’s home. The challenge is to retrofit existing farm buildings, and the surrounding landscape, to better reflect both the different lifestyle and needs of the present owners. At the back of the farmhouse slopes have been modified to accommodate terraces, gardens and pathways linking through them. View sheds have been emphasized to showcase the property and the landscape filled with four seasons of interest. The geometry of the hard-scaping (walls, stairs, and walkways) is softened by the addition of lush plant material selected for both textural and colour qualities (evergreen, flowering and foliage). This view includes Smooth Viburnum (Viburnum nudum ‘Winterthur’), Purple Smokebush (Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’), Mellow Yellow Spiraea (Spiraea thunbergii ‘Ogon’), and Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia).

Celebrating Southern California's mild climate, this hill-top residence was enhanced with an a bubbling water feature, outdoor shower, custom fencing and a Mediterranean plant palette. The fence's design, with its slender vertical lines, draws the eye toward the site's lovely borrowed scenery. An outdoor shower, nestled into a corner of the yard, beckons the homeowners to bath in the open air. Photo by Martin Cox.

The steep site unveils rich garden vignettes elegantly integrated through carefully crafted stone walls, stone paths, and abundant plantings. The stepping stone path sweeps down around the house changing scenes from a sunny rose garden to a shady glen, and grounds the visitor at bluestone terrace patios off the main living areas, which can be accessed from the interior through a collection of French doors. This Piedmont residence received the 2009 Design Award as the Best Remodel and Landscape.
