This contemporary garden creates a relaxed and natural living space in this new-build Cambridge home. Planting close to the glazed elevation of the modern architecture blurs the boundaries between house, garden and landscape, integrating the client’s daily experience of all three. The transition from house into garden is immediate, creating a feeling of stepping directly into the landscape. Seasonal transformations are emphasised and celebrated through naturalistic planting. Alongside this, a simple, restrained palette of limestone hard landscaping provides a crisp counterpoint to the loose planting. The bespoke limestone and steel table and benches, designed by Colm Joseph, offer a perfect spot to relax amongst the soft planting. A large boulder seat provides an additional spot to perch, doubling up as a natural bird bath in this wildlife friendly garden.

Inner city courtyard garden

On this project we had two small courtyards to landscape. A small front courtyard that was lead out from the dinning room and a rear courtyard with large blank walls as a canvas. Patterned trellis was installed to allow climbers to grow and create a greenwall over time with 1 mature sized maple tree the feature installed into a corten steel ring. Synthetic turf was used to keep maintenance to a minimum on this project.

The neatly mown lawn, despite its tidy appearance, isn't treated with fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides; it consists of whatever happens to grow there, clipped short, and is much more eco-friendly and low-maintenance than traditional lawn.

This home now has great street appeal and the courtyard provides a pretty flower filled living space throughout the year. There is even a small vegetable box squeezed in.

Le jardin a été conçu pour Les Comptoirs Richard, il est situé au siège de l'entreprise. Elle est fondée à Paris en 1892, son siège est situé dans l'ancienne petite manufacture de café, ancien domicile de l’entreprise familiale. Afin de concevoir le petit jardin attenant à la maison et à la boutique des Comptoirs Richard, il faut comprendre l'histoire du lieu : après s’être fait un nom dans la négoce de vins et de spiritueux, la Maison Richard a développé ensuite son savoir-faire autour du café, elle continue son expansion dans la vente de thé et de tisanes. La maison, devenue le siège de l'entreprise, s'ouvre sur ce petit coin de verdure en plein cœur de Paris. Le jardin de 200m² est découpé en deux espaces; le premier accueille une terrasse aménagée de pots en terre cuite faits main, des "Atelier Vierkant", en lien avec les espaces de repos et de restauration de l'entreprise. Le second est constitué de jardinières en plessis de bois de châtaigniers, plantées d'aromatiques. Ces aromatiques ont été sélectionnées, en collaboration avec Les Comptoirs Richard, et sont cultivées puis séchées afin de créer des petits sachets de tisanes, afin d'être offerts aux clients privilégiés. Co-conception avec Athénaïs de Nadaillac pour STUDIO MUGO. Réalisation travaux espaces verts MUGO PAYSAGE Vue sur la terrasse.

Secret Gardens

Our clients have a busy life so they wanted their inner city garden to be low fuss and look low fuss. They wanted outdoor spaces that looked relaxed, with a simple and soft palette of finishes that acknowledged their coastal location. The site conditions and their brief also called for plants that were hardy and that would tolerate the full sun and sandy soils. The structural finishes and the plant colours provide a harmonious blend and compliment the design choices of the interior.

The owners had a messy balcony, using it only for bar-b-q. We transformed the balcony to an area with a dinning table, sitting area and even adding a cool swing. Now, they can watch best views of the Carmel from every spot they choose, even from the house. the vegetation is a drought tolerant, with all year interest. It suits the surrounding landscape and does not compete with it.

This garden was overgrown and not used at all by the property owners. The homeowners wanted a contemporary courtyard that was family friendly and modern. To achieve this, materials were chosen to match the stylish interior of the house. Also by using lighter coloured material we were able to brighten up the garden. The printed porcelain paving gave a contemporary modern feel whilst introducing added interest. Cedar batten fencing was used to clad the boundaries to minimise the oppressive feel of the high boundaries and to introduce more light into the garden. The cedar timber floating bench now provides a place to sit and entertain. It is also the perfect height for the clients’ children to use as a play bench. To brighten up the dull and dark corner by the french doors, the original steps were clad in beautiful blue and grey encaustic tiles to add much needed colour and interest in an area that had been previously neglected. This contemporary courtyard is now bright and welcoming and used by the property owners and their children on a daily basis.
