“eme design designed & oversaw the construction of a new house for me. Throughout this process they were supportive, responsive, communicated well & were a pleasure to work with. Their experience & empathy allowed them to intuit ideas & solutions that suited me & my current lifestyle, but which also support an ethical & sustainable approach to living in the future. The design created by eme was delightful, displaying sensitivity to historical & geographical factors, the house fitting in well to the small street in my inner suburb & providing a creative, sustainable & eye-catching take on the weatherboard worker's cottage that it replaced. Based on an initial brief of an energy efficient house on a tight block with enough space for a highly productive garden, it is a lovely house to live in, skillfully designed in such a way that there is a natural flow from one part of the house to another & no wasted space. Through the use of carefully placed windows, sloping eaves & an internal rendered brick wall that absorbs the heat from the winter sun, the house is naturally cool in summer & warm in winter with lots of natural light coming in through windows that frame a range of views of the outside world. The budget was tight but adhered to.”

We highly valued where we were living, at Westwyck, an acclaimed ‘eco development’ in Melbourne’s inner north. However, deciding on a ‘tree change’, we bought land in Trentham in the Central Highlands of Victoria. Needing a designer with similar values for our new home, we began and ended our search at ‘Maxa Design’. At our first meeting it was immediately apparent that Sven Maxa and Niall o Healaithe, the latter the designer assigned to our project, were kindred spirits. Immensely personable, relaxed, yet clearly attentive and receptive to our ideas, we left that first meeting knowing we need look no further. We presented them with the following ‘vision’. We asked them to: Create a contemporary home that mirrors an uncomplicated lifestyle. Create a design that modestly reveals an understated depth of character. Create a space that embraces its inhabitants. We outlined what was important to us in our house design, and certain products, features and finishes that we were determined to use. From this stating point, Niall worked closely with us throughout the project, using his expertise and experience to develop our ideas and suggest refinements or variations for our consideration.
