How do we heat and light a bathroom with three-metre ceilings?
Comments (23)We too live in a cold winter climate with our bathrooms all on the southern side and faced similar issues as you do. One smaller bathroom does not have a window so we put in a Velux skylight which provides amazing natural light through the day. This may not be to your liking, especially if you have a period home. We also use heated towel rails and under tile heating (just enough to take the chill off and stop mould) in winter. Although we have a light in the shower recess, a bonus is the large fixed shower head with inbuilt LED, which at night gives the feeling of showering under moonlight. We chose light colours and mirrored recessed cabinets to reflect as much natural light as possible....See MoreBathroom/Ensuite Renovation Books
Comments (2)Chris, like most things in our industry, the devil's in the detail and knowledge that best comes in the form of practical experience. Whilst a book or online resource can provide a guide, for something like a bathroom the strategy of attack can be practically varied depending upon the outcome and final detail desired. Are you changing plumbing? Are you having a seamless shower base? What is the scope of the tiling? Are you having a wall basin? taps in the basin or out of the walls? Shower taps or mixer? Bath freestanding or in hob? Vanity detail? any recesses? lighting? windows? Waterproofing is something honestly best left for the pros, as it needs to be done to certain standards. Preparation and straightening of walls/substrates is also critical for (most) tiled finishes, more or less so depending upon the particular tile selection. It's all that detail and the sequencing and coordination of and between the various elements/subtrades that's critical to the outcome. If you have a budget in mind perhaps it would be worthwhile you running your renovation project by a bathroom specialist to get a benchmark. You may be surprised as to how cost effective they can be to deal with it all themselves, and save yourself the inevitable headaches and hassles involved. Good luck! Comments (26)I live with a beautiful sea view which I love, but which presents its own set of challenges. When we moved in the interior was painted grey but on an overcast day, all I see out the window is grey - grey sky, grey sea and when I turned around there were grey walls as well. It was quite oppressive. We’ve repainted a lovely soft white which isn’t too dazzling on a bright day, but definitely lifts the gloom on a dull day. I’ve added punches of bright colour here and there and now I love my space (and my view in all weathers)...See MoreHelp! What size pendant light for stair case?
Comments (13)Two issues -- The middle size looks 'about right' and approx 40cm diameter ( approx 2/3rds the size of the larger one ) . But I don't think it suits many modern styles -- a beach inspired place with say white woven wallpaper or seagrass style flooring or some distressed furniture would be complemented by this , but a modern build with say painted walls doesn't do anything with this style IMO . Go classier rather than laid-back would be my advice , and that would depend on the decor . And thinking about things , one 'trick' I used in a commercial building I own was 5 polished copper shades up an L shaped stairway -- the ceiling was flat , so nearly 5 metres 'up' at the base , and I used 28cm ones with the biggest round clear LED bulbs ( 8Watt ) I could get , all hung on that oldstyle '1940's iron' type cord , so they were all 2.6metres above the stair below -- it created that 'going up' visual effect . One large light ( especially say 4 metres above the deck ) won't give that effect ....See MoreEco-Luxury Design
