The black leather sofas are the ones we currently have, but the modern one is in the family room. The antique one is currently in formal lounge, but we are not necessarily planning on keeping it… I am so complicated, aren't I :(

OnePlan. That is a good idea in theory. Unfortunately the whole of our home is a constant battle of wills.. I don't think we'll ever sort this out to either of us being satisfied. We both have such ingrained opposing ideas, made worse by the fact we've both brought items from previous relationships. He has heavy looking dark furniture from when he lived in Colorado, and mine is light and very modern from living in California. Now we live in a Mediterranean climate here, and OH can't adjust to that, plus the fact that he has never lived in a large home, and wants to maintain that cosy, warm [cluttered] small home feeling. It's fortunate that we still love each other despite our differences. After all, it's just 'stuff', and we have more important things to worry bout with his big C taking him away in pieces - 3 operations so far as it keeps moving around his body.

The covering of the sofa is less important than the style - go for one that is long enough to lie down on, not too puffy and not a corner suite. The key thing with your dining furniture is to have the same colour legs on your sofa - there is often choice of stain or most places can arrange this for you sometimes oiling it yourself is an option. I have found sourcing nice dining furniture can be more challenging than couches so I would do that first- remember you don't have to match the table with chairs you can mix and match which is usually more interesting. A relatively neutral couch is a good idea but think about durability - personally i am not a fan of black couches unless they are light in frame- they can really dominate your room. If you want lighter style of furniture try places that do retro - mid century as they seem to be smaller and lighter in appearance. Bring in some texture and colour with cushions a clock, a throw rug and art work - but don't rush - take your time finding the right thing. all the best

personally I like a home that has a similar style on the inside as the outside, it just makes sense to me. In the past I thought building extensions should be similar in style as to the original, however after reading (and commenting on) Houzz posts I am now coming round to the idea of a modern extension on an older building. But having a kitchen and bathroom in different styles, that might just be to your taste and that is fine - there is nothing wrong with a building reflecting the personality of the owner!
