Changing the shower tiles to something plain / stony, the shower frames to frameless (or a shower curtain if you like them), and the floor to er... something would make a huge difference to the visual impact (I quite like the floor, but I'm assuming you don't!) Swapping out the toilet and medicine cupboard for more modern or more timeless styles would help too (I'm usually a massive advocate of keeping, repurposing, and reusing things that aren't broken, but I have to admit both the 80s plastic cisterns in our house are going!) What's feeling like a big intrusion in that photo is the framed shower screen by the toilet because it is chunky and opaque, and so dominates the room.

I'm not qualified to comment on layout as I don't know anything about your plumbing or budget, but if you wanted to keep you current basic layout, it might be worth thinking about a curved corner shower, rather than a square one, as that would be less intrusive to the sight line in the room and also add some visual interest. Our ensuite has a tiled corner shower that basically has the front corner cut off (so three straight sides, rather than an actual curve) and that works quite well.

For the sink, it looks quite big? If so, since this is just an ensuite, have you thought about a smaller sink, mounted in / on a narrow floating vanity to help with storage? It might be useful for sparking people's ideas if you can get a photo of the sink area (although I know how hard it is to photograph tiny ensuites!)

I think it's just a matter of using your current space to its best abilities.
I definitely agree with a corner shower unit like the pic below, & think you could find a corner vanity to better utilize the space as well.
Are the walls brick or plaster?
If they have a cavity I think you could cut into it the whole length of the side wall & put a cupboard sitting in it with a mirror doors over the top so it sits flush. This would give you a ton more storage & not impose on the bathroom space at all, & a mirror the length of the wall would make it feel more spacious too.

Hi all good suggestions so far!! A larger light coloured tile will make the floor appear larger. Always showing more floor by using wall mounted vanities is a must. Go for white everything and accessorise with colour.
And MIRRORS! A decorative one on that side wall as well as over the vanity will double the size and help get more light in.

We are buying a house with exactly the same challenge - I shall watch with interest!!

An easy option for the storage question is to put mirror cabinets (2 of 2 doors) recessed into the wall pretty much full length over the basin wall even along the toilet area, do a 180* hinge on the door second from the wall the toilet backs onto. The cabinets will sit about an inch into the room from the wall.
We had 1.8m long by 0.6m high in both the ensuite and main bathrooms as only storage and that coped really easily with two adults (or two teenagers) using each room. :)
also let's you have a wall hung basin or pedestal freeing up that visual space.

Thank you all for the ideas, I was always thinking to put a corner shower, so that's a great idea! My other issue was that above the current basin there is a window, so unless we brick that up we won't be able to put a mirror above it :(
I have actually come to the conclusion that we will list likely demo this room and extent our walk in robe into it. From there will we make our main bathroom right behind this to our ensuite.
We have 4 bedrooms, so we're thinking of making one of them into the main bathroom, because the particular room sits right between the other two bedrooms at the moment. I'm hoping it will increase future worth. I would assume it would be much more appealing to have a large walk through robe and decent sized ensuite whilst still having a 3 bedroom house! I really appreciate everyone's ideas, thank you!

I'd talk to a real estate agent (or several) and a plumber (or several) before making any big decisions - if you are on a slab, making a bedroom into a bathroom could cost a heck of a lot as new drainage and water lines will have to be put in. I'm not saying it is a good or bad idea, but you absolutely need to know for certain the impact on the house value vs the cost, as it will be expensive, and that definitely merits professional advice.

If you decide to keep the small ensuite, you might find this blog post from House Nerd helpful - Maya has a tiny ensuite and she also had the same window over sink problem as you. http://www.house-nerd.com/articles/our-bathroom-renovation-what-it-cost I do think if you could get a lovely small ensuite like this that you were happy with, it would improve the saleability of your house and be much less risky (and cheaper!) than losing a bedroom (although I am not a real estate agent - I'm just judging from all the houses we watched while learning the market before buying ours - so as above, get professional advice!)

Thanks neotoma, our house is on stumps and has very easy access underneath so we should be okay. My partner plays football and has a lot of tradies at the club so we will defiantly go through all the specs before making any decisions

Ah cool. Stumps do make life so much easier for reno! I'd still drag a couple of real estate agents out though, just to see where 4x2 vs 3x2 sits in your neighbourhood.

Dee, if resale is important to you - as in you are planning to sell in the next 5 years, then I would attend as many open houses in your immediate area as you can before you decide all this and just gauge what other homes have and the prices they want for them. You also need to ensure you keep everything in proportion with the rest of your house. If your living areas are not spacious for example, having a very sumptuous master bedroom suite will be totally out of proportion with the rest of the house and not necessarily attractive to buyers. If you are planning on staying in the house for a good length of time - at least 10 years - then forget it, do what you want to make your home comfortable for you. I never cease to be amazed at the renovations and alterations people do after paying top dollars for a home.

If you personally have no need for two bathrooms, then maybe accessing the main bathroom from the master bedroom is a good way to go, it depends on your needs regarding the other 3 bedrooms. Is one of the other bedrooms large enough to put a powder room into and still have good space for a bedroom or office. That would give you an extra toilet at least. Does your laundry have room for a shower to add extra amenities that way.

Just did our one meter by one meter, ended up stealing space from under stairs. Used space as before and put a wall hung toilet and medicine cabinet. Did the best we could with what space we had!

Danielle thanks for putting you pics up! Your ensuite looks exactly the same as our ensuite except for the stairs above (we have an exposed beam ceiling throughout), it's definitely given us some ideas :)

Many people would consider two bathrooms essential. if not 2 bathrooms at least 2 toilets. Your ensuite may be tiny, but tiny does allow you to function.
