How to renovate front porch/entrance sympathetically to 1950s era
Comments (7)This was my thinking about that pantry window (and there has been a lot of thinking, to my draughtie's despair!) : I guess it comes down to the fact that this is a renovation rather than a new-build, so it will always involve compromises. I chose to have the pantry on that front side rather than the back in order to get big stacking sliding doors across the whole back wall, which is north-facing - where the kitchen-dining area will open onto a deck. I have ensured that the renovation plan works with the current layout as much as possible, rather than forcing it to be something it isn't (I had a more complex design done initially, that was much more expensive, because it was trying to make the layout like you might see in a new build). Having said that, it also has to be functional and work for the lifestyle we have in this era. I think our floorplan achieves that - with the only minor point of contention now being that rather unobtrusive pantry window! I think for resale, and for the majority of people, if it came down to a choice between having a walk-in pantry with a window that isn't the same height/width as the others at the front of the house, or not having the WIP, the WIP would come out well ahead....See MoreHelp on designing a front porch!
Comments (9)<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>So my husband and I are finally on the move to get this done now, have been getting quotes but want your ideas on the wooden steps and whether or not we take the steps to the edge of the posts and over the grass? Because we can park a second car in the drive we won’t take the steps all the way down to the propertys edge but stick with 2 steps. The builder suggested railings but I’m not keen on it! He said maybe make the bottom step the feature and the smaller step on top. How wide should we stretch the steps across? Thanks heaps in advance...See MoreFront porch design
Comments (6)Can you still get those bricks ? I'd do your new door , a brick column , and 'just' a peak ( gable ) at exactly the same angle as your roof ( up and down , if that makes sense ) with boards the same width and colour as the existing boards , and roof the same colour as your roof , even if its a different material . It will look 'original' , and cut down maybe 25% or less of the light , but from the street ( assuming the door is currently street visible ) people will still see the glass and the door , and you'll get your protection and it won't look out of place . Personally , I think a flat roof or even sloping one way ( be it left or right or forwards ) could easily look out of place , whilst a glass cube could make it look like an office building entrance -- just a simple entry with a column and a gable would be the go ....See MoreFront porch converted into an ensuite.
Comments (12)The yellow plan is better. Also because of the existing facade of home, it would be good to keep the original front room windows, and then reinstall them on the facade of your new bathroom.(Old porch) With this home, which looks like it is an Australian California bungalow, it would be a shame to take the windows out....See Moreminnie101
