Is a small walk in pantry annoying?
I really like walk in pantries! We are renovating, so was so excited at the prospect of having a walk in pantry! However, I'm not sure it's going to happen.... We buy food in bulk so need a lot of storage for dry goods and frozen.
The option for a walk in pantry is for a small-ish one - see option 2 on the attached. It's more like a big cupboard that you stand in! The alternative is a big (800mm wide, floor to ceiling) cupboard in the laundry for food storage.
My questions are:
Will the small proportions of the walk in pantry make it annoying to use? The space to stand is only 550mm wide... Or will I love it despite it's small size where everything is in front of you compared to a regular cupboard....? Anyone out there with a small walk in pantry?
I'm thinking the shallow shelves of the walk in pantry are more useable than the 600 or 700mm deep drawers/shelves in the alternative laundry cupboard. Comments re shallow shelves vs deep drawers/shelves given the limited space for a person in the pantry.
Another alternative would be to put the appliances (kettle, toaster, soda stream, milk frother) and microwave from the kitchen facing cupboard next to the pantry all in the walk in pantry. I'm not keen on this though as I think it would be a pain to have to go into the walk in pantry to make a cup of tea/piece of toast or a quick zap in the microwave.... There comes the question of what do you do in the kitchen vs what do you do in the kitchen (we aren't at all posh!)

I would look at dividing the laundry room in two with all pantry behind microwave cbd but much bigger pantry space and walk in. Depends on the room next to this of course
Curious if you follow this option and moved the second freezer into pantry (still lots of room), moved the main fridge to the left & shuffle the bench space to accommodate the microwave and appliances on either this or the pantry end in a larger area maybe taking doors down to bench height to hide the appliances you use frequently plugged in ready to go.

When I can get back into my favourite clothes after shedding a few kilo's that might change and the walk in robe may take top spot. Here's an idea though... Comments (8)Hi Joy. A few questions: 1) you could have a pocket door into the pantry, unless there are reasons you definitely don't want a door? The beauty of a pocket door is it can be open all the time if you want, but if you do run noisy appliances in there (blender, coffee grinder, Thermomix, etc) you may appreciate being able to contain the noise. 2) slide out shelves under bench-do you mean drawers? Drawers hold more and it's much easier to find and access things. You could have soft close drawers. 3) it looks like the depth of pantry space is 1.4m. Is that correct? If you were to have a sink where would you place it? There doesn't appear to be enough depth to the room to allow for two benches, one to house a sink. So, would you have sink on the outside wall? If you don't think you would use a sink, then don't have one. They take up some space that you may not want to sacrifice. Just speaking from my own experience now: I have a butler's pantry, with a pocket door, with a sink (we use it every day), two benches, lots of drawers, an open pantry to house just about anything (larger appliances, etc), and a narrow open shelving unit that sits on one part of a bench (for drink glasses and spirits). You could easily have a wine cabinet built into part of your pantry shelving unit-maybe high enough off floor so little children cannot reach bottles. I'll attach photos of both sides of my pantry so you can visualise it better. We store our wine in purpose-built unit built into our hallway wall. Comments (37)I think I am satisfied with my kitchen pantry layout now. I have a AI image of the pantry attached and have worked out where to put everything ........ BUT I am rethinking the need to extend the house (an the verandah as a consequence). The extension would take the internal space from 5300 x 7950 to 5300 x 9450. Is 7950 enough for a kitchen, dining, lounge. Alternatively we could close in on side of the existing verandah to lengthen the southern side by 2895 but I'm not sure how wide this would need to be and how I would organise the space. Comments (22)understanding all your restrictions would help suggest other options but the original staircase uses too much space and if you add scaled sized furniture to the original plans you'll see that the meals area is mostly taken up with walkways to the stairs and back door and there's very little space left for a dining table..the stairs have to fit both the floors of the house and it's not possible to reduce staircase space upstairs without also changing downstairs...See More
11 years agolast modified: 11 years agoNarrow shelves are great! if you can have plenty of them..have you thought of pull outs? I ripped my pantry out as I was to short to see the top shelves and the deep shelves had turned into hiding places for bean tins! I installed a couple of these and didn't look back! Oh yes the bulk freezer thats in the shed/garage
You do tart these up with your own panels and can put cupboards over for those unused dishes and so on.

Thanks everyone. I've really rationalised what's in the laundry - that's like a cupboard now! It's a compromise we can live with to get a decent walk in pantry. And drawn inspiration from your advice/ideas and a couple of pics. The rest of that wall stays the same as previous post - we don't have anywhere else to put extra freezer!

I'm thinking of having the doors of the appliance cupboard flush with the front cabinetry so no benchtop will be seen when they're closed - to maintain symmetry of that back wall. Or will I appreciated a bit of bench space in front of the appliance cupboard and the symmetry won't be that out...?
