The detail on the fence should pick up the detail on the house. As it is at present there are no elements of the fence which relate to the house in any way. The piers are also different. It also appears that the wall is single brick. If you paint the fence without waterproof sealing the back of the wall the paint will peal or flake off. The paint even flakes with unsealed double brick as moisture gradually works its way into the bricks. Before doing anything, work out whether the cost of finishing the wall and fence and painting is worth it as the fence will still look alien to the house. However, if it's within your current budget I agree that a simple flat top picket fence would look better with this house with piers only at the gateways. I would also consider removing the concrete directly in front of the fence. Originally it was grass or planted as the two neighbours' verges appear to be. Plant the verge with a low hedge to soften the bulk of the fence, particularly if it's staying as is. Prune the lower suckers or branches of the tree to allow clear access on the footpath.

@JWA Electrical - I forgot to point out, I did hire a pro to do the toughest parts of the fence - acquiring the hardwood, measuring the timber, sinking the posts, and levelling everything. The business is called Treescapes - who I have reviewed here. My neighbour and I simply found the metal mesh and fixed it in place. We are now planting plants and still need to tension some wire up the top of the posts to enable plants to grow taller.

Thankyou for all help and suggestions. We are going with brick pillars and hedge between, with chain wire fence for security whilst the hedges grow. We want to tie it in with the front brick pillar and panel fence. We would not the pillars as close t ogeather as the fence, but we arent sure if to do every second, third or fourth pillar spacing?. Appreciate opinions.

I would not touch your fence for at least 12 months. At the moment it is giving you a quiet and private garden "room" which leads off your charming front verandah. Why don't you see how much you use this outside space during the different seasons before you make a decision? At the moment I would be comfortable enough to sit on your front verandah in my PJ's and dressing gown having a morning wake up coffee and enjoying the morning sun. I would never do that if the neighbourhood could see me. Never rush into making any changes to a new home until you understand the home and how it performs through the different seasons.
