Possum proof planters for balcony

Hi. New apartment, want to grow a few herbs and lettuce etc but there are possums about. Presently I have covered the existing pots with large square bird cages with the bottom pulled out. I'd like to have raised pots/beds and something nicer looking. Does anyone know if there is a product that would be suitable please? Living in an apartment now I don't have the means to make anything (and I'm not that handy, or young) so need something ready made or VERY easy to put together. Thank you

Hello,

We had the same problem with possums so we started this company.

PVC connectors - these can be just pushed onto pipe and covered with netting and secured with our snapclamps and problem fixed. We also have many options such as hinges so you can put a door or a lid on it. Please have a look at our website and have a look at our cage page for many ideas. These connectors are strong, versatile , not expensive and easy.

Hi Robert. Not quite what I'm looking for but it might help someone else. I saw a nice looking raised tub (on legs) at Masters and there was an optional plastic top. However I need it to let air in, such as wire, as our balcony gets quite a lot of sun. Maybe you can invent something (he he) and expand your business. There are many apartments being built in Sydney now so lots of balconies among the possums. You should have a ready made market.

We've just put the cos lettuce in now and under the bird cage, and another few plants in a separate pot without cover. We'll see what happens over the next few days.

Organic fruits never used to look as good because of the fact that pesticides weren't used and they got knocked around a bit more. I have noticed lated here though that a lot of organic looks every bit as good as non organic. Maybe they are using more controlled environments, before they were more hippy grown. Sometimes they have to be picked before fully grown and the bugs descend on them. I've been thinking of using a big tub on my back balcony to grow a selection of salad things, a couple of lettuce, some mini cucumbers and even some cherry tomatoes - just one or two plants to give me enough to get me through the summer, but then I wonder really if the effort is worth it.

Q7) Louise - I live in a small federation single fronted cottage in an inner west suburb of Sydney and would like to freshen the façade to modernise it and improve on the street appeal. Within the next month I am planning on replacing the bullnose awning to one that is flat but angled, paint the exterior of the house and lay tiles in the porch and step areas (carport and planting to soften the façade will come later). The tiles that will be laid in the porch are artisan style ones shown in the pics below, steps will be marble. The house is north facing and I am going for the Hamptons look. I would like to know (a) if you think this colour scheme will work and if there is a better colour scheme that you can please recommend - Dulux tranquil retreat for the exterior, trims will be crisp white, surfmist for the awning and momentum for gutters, (b) should the awning have a corrugated or trimdek profile and (c) the tradie will be removing the timber post and replacing this will aluminium ones white in colour - is aluminium a terrible idea? The houses on the street are a mix of federation, bungalows and modern ones. Some are as-is in pretty much original condition and others freshened up with render and paint in pretty neutral colours.

Just my opinion but I think either the stackstone or the above from Bunnings would suit I feel the stackstone gives a little extra texture without being 'in your face' and it does not offend me with your balcony tiles at all I kinda like it. I am all about asthetics and as a retired art restorer (still keeping my hand in a little though some people don't like me retired :) ) I have always been about asthetics and symetry , I like things to match but not too overdone, a bit of restraint as long as you look at it and it just works BTW you have a great view lots of greenery and trees that in itself is art to me. I am sure if you choose either it will look good I prefer the stonework that should never date but then neither would the composite decking, I think that the part you wish to do can take a little extra texture without 'fighting' the asthetic but that is my opinion, I realize we are all different and have differing ideas the main thing is YOU have to be happy with your decisions. I am sure you'll get there:)

No problem , when you buy the connectors separately you can make any structure you want from the small frame above to a walk in cage. The netting on our site clips over it letting in the air but the possums out ( different netting to the above).

Hi Sydneymidge, We had possums eating their way through our apartment herb and veg garden which is made up of very large terracotta pots and planterboxes built into the building. What we have found that has worked a treat for us is to head down to Bunnings and buy some owls - one solar- solar power owl - with eyes that glow in the dark and one with a bobble head bobble head owl. While I hate having plastic animals, I love that they're working at keeping our herbs, veg and fruit intact for our use without harming the possums. Go for whatever containers you like - just get some owls - they worked for us. Oh the owls will also keep away other birds and rats.

That sounds a good plan and probably the easiest (and least expensive) for me. I'm adding a couple of photos to show the caged plants also some pansies in their prison. Don't think the tin cat will help much as he has lost the lustre in his eyes, but he is very low maintenance.
