Thanks Janine and Luke. Our home is not country by any means. It is a new build. The dining room is part of an open space that joins our stairs, living and kitchen. We are going for a "scandinavian look" if that is even the word for it! haha. A lot of timber, timber floors and furniture, clean whites and greys. Lots of timber stacker doors, glass pendant lights, glass handrails on open timber stairs, all white kitchen with one long large window, a single timber shelf rather than upper cupboards and oversized glazed white subway tile splash back. It's hard to explain….do you think this sort of table would work in that sort of space?

I suspect the easiest and most efficient way is to get a custom table built to accommodate your bench seating. I would use chairs that could be moved away from the table when not eating which would add to your counter space as well. I'm not sure about wheels on a table that will have so much traffic around it because it could cause an accident if someone leans against it not expecting it to move. I can also see youngsters getting into a game of push/pull with the table at the most inopportune moment. :D

I think it depends on the size of your household and how many people sit down to dine. Do you have family and friends for dinner? The current round table looks like it can seat 4 people comfortably, but six people may be a bit cosy. If you need a table for more than four people then I would go rectangular. You could always compromise with an oval table? An oval table doesn't need to align with anything, so it can be angled to make the most of the space without looking crooked. the advantage with a rectangular table is that you can have an extending table that need only be expanded occasionally while a round table usually has to stay the same size..but in a room over 6m long you should be able to have either shaped dining table but the rectangular allows more circulation space around the room but a round coffee table allows easier access between the couches and to the sliding door
