On the downside this room will always be the main thoroughfare, and the upside is that it has the opportunity to introduce and ipress people entering your home. Being a room they enter as opposed to a boxy hallway, it gives people the feeling of lint and space, I would add to that some comfort, in the form of luxury. Being a room that is walked through and not 'to', I would utilize it as an escape, somewhere to head when you want to have time away from living zones, often shared and loud. Treat this as a retreat. You can build or buy a beautiful floor to ceiling bookshelf that I would position adjoining the entrance to create a partition or corridor, so it blocks the room initially and slowly reveals it's cosyness. The bookcas could be double sided so it allows light to flow through and display items in peek a boo fashion. Remove the soa in the front walkway as it is a visual blocker, and place it under the window. Normally I wouldn't do that, but in your case, a rug in front and under that sofa, the ottoman in front of the window seat, and a tray table in front of the sofa. The new 'hallway' would direct people through the home to those living zones, quickly and neatly. Make that wall a gallery wall, with your collection of images or family in a beautiful eclectic collection of frames. Leave some empty or frame objects you love as much S photos. Books, cushions, throws and fabric exude comfort and luxury if chosen to do so. A beautiful side table and lamp next to the sofa ( i spy a power point) so the room will feel warm with a throw over the arm, a book in hand and somewhere to place your coffee. A beautiful space, make use of it as your own sanctuary.

Well done, it is great to see pieces of quality furniture being re-purposed and not just thrown away. Not to take away from the work of a professional upholsterer but I recently redid a bedhead with some careful planning and a heavy duty staple gun. Turned out great!

I have some 60s TV chairs that recline, I love them because they are a bit retro and suit my dodgy back. I had them reupholstered at the very exorbitant cost of $500 each! They are now a fabric I love but, as someone else pointed out, went from squashy and comfortable to hard foam. I'm spending a lot of time sitting in them to soften them up ;) Also one of them had a higher back, which fitted my 6ft partner, but when they came back they were all the same height. My fault as I should have talked it through with the upholsterer. I would do it again but only for furniture I really love, and I'd be very clear about what I wanted. On another note, we had 2 club chairs made for us more than 20 years ago - we love love them and they will be good as new for a long time. It was way better than reupholstering 2 old club chairs.

Also note that spaces filled with furniture can often make the room look bigger so oversized is fine. You just need to get a good balance. Once you get a rug, coffee table and maybe lamp or other accessories or indoor plants the sofa won't appear so large. Just remember to think about scale and proportion as these are important when pairing furniture. Compare a coffee table with open base on legs to a solid block for looks. The block type might disguise the scale of the couch. Some colour or warmer tones will also bring the space to life. Stick with your choice and dress the rest of it.... and forget what others think.
