Help with dining room accent wall!!
I am trying to find an accent wall color for my dining room. The walls are currently SW Kilim beige. My husband wants to keep the walls beige but I think we should add an accent wall for dimension. I tried SW Urban bronze and study brown but they were both way too dark. The picture on the wall has dark tones so the accent wall can't be too dark or the picture won't pop. Should I just leave the entire dr kilim beige or should I continue to look for an accent color? I was thinking a light grey or a darker color on the kilim beige color strip called Hopsack.

Comments (25)Hi everyone, I'd like to thank you all for your input. Have been a busy spring and summer, but now I'm back and able to focus on the living room. Couple of things have been done/removed since lately: 1. Leather lounge set: I've (luckily) sold the leather lounge set - absolutely great piece with great quality, but not my taste at all. It made a world difference to the living room and even dear hubby, who liked the set, did acknowledge that the difference of less furnitures is great. 2. The rug 3. The white cabinet 4. New curtains with pelmet I love the pelmet although it's old style and yes, the curtains are too short! Will amend this at later stage :) These changes have made a huge impact on the room. Also, I'm also open to change the dining table with chairs for another nice option in an attempt to make this more interesting/cozy/inviting. So, these are the only things that I won't be able to change (we may (note on may) also move house by the end of this year/early next year) # Blinds # Colour of trims and built-in bookcase # Camel back sofa - I'm happy to reupholster it though and change the fabric. This will cost $2000 but I think it's worth it since they are really comfortable and are of good quality. I'd like to integrate the white frame with the gold poster in the design - an idea is to place 3x posters on the biggest wall of the air conditioner. I'm aware that a brown frame may suit the gold poster better, but I'm so tired of the colour brown at this moment. --------- So, I now feel I'm able to adjust as per your suggestions and recommendations much easier now. Appreciate every response and idea (And sorry for the mess of papers on the desk and floor! Comments (4)Brianna, I agree with Debbie about the light shade. What a beautiful table your Grandfather made for you. It's certainly one to treasure. I would make some rectangular placemats in an upholstery fabric that can be washed. If you are making them yourself, prewash the fabric first so that any shrinkage should happen in that first wash. The fabric should be much lighter than the table. As for the middle of the table, how about a nice round or square plate. I wouldn't have anything high that would interrupt conversation. The other thing for the middle of the table that would work would be 4 square glass vases (9-11cm square and 10cms high) with a pear in each. Comments (41)A rug under the table will cause problems when moving the chairs. To be safe and no nuisance, it has to be a huge rug. (A large round(!) floor cover....?) I like the street lamp. But I guess it is a STREET - lamp and makes the room rather sterile. It is kind of tallish in the corner and enhances to large distance to the ceiling. bring something else down from the ceiling. I guess you don't want a lamp because you have downlights. Do some search for some nice art, which does not move (shadows) in the light. Or use a beige old fashioned chandelier. Go bit by bit. And think about the carpet before you get it. Work on flow and lightness, delight, round parts, oval to balance the room. If I painted something, I would paint the stark white frames a little softer/toned. The white is a hard contrast. So is the black. (And I would probably paint a half wall white.) And the black ornament (light?) that comes down from the ceiling must come further down, should be larger. And then I would play with the room for dinner situations..... you can bring all the colour in you like. I wonder what the room looks like during the day. Try taking the (beautiful) mirror out and hang a canvas. The plant on the table looks forlorn. The Arabic lamp in the left corner looks lonely too. this would be a nice corner for a piece of furniture. An extra chair finds room in spots like this often. Do you have enough space when serving food? (Can you get light switches in a colour like the walls?) I would probably take 2 chairs out unless they are constantly needed and take the placemats off. Put a larger item.... maybe a plate of fruit in the middle. The repetition of chairs and placemats enhances the very formal atmosphere. I have just seen a cream coloured chandelier. Darryl Carter for Benjamin Moore is first photo; third is SW Sea Salt. Your columns at the entrance to the room are fairly dramatic and so I think using a deep hue would look great.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI would so paint the whole dining room a deep shade or a bright shade. This is a room that is not used a lot by people these days and it will contrast with all the rest of the beige walls! I say paint the whole thing and I love your green!

8 years agoCan you do the dark color on the wainscot?? I agree that up on the wall the picture will disappear. If you have to use that painting on that wall, then keep it a light color. I have seen dark wainscot and it looks amazing! I was going to do mine in black. Kendall Charcoal is always a favorite. For sure do a rug with a pattern. Or drapes. or both.

we bought thin drapes so that light can continue to come through the dining room. They're cream so they ate very subtle and don't make a big impact on the room. Still looking for a nice rug.
