Wall art? Mirror? What would you put above the bed?

Hi, I would really appreciate some help decorating our bedroom. I need something for the wall above the bed! I was thinking 3 large beech coloured timber frames with white matt boards and black and white photos. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Comments (21)Hi Kris, I currently have a painting that highlights the green and warm greys that are in your room. I think it would go nicely and complement the stone feel of the lamps too! Alternatively if you like the harder finish you could go for a bold black and minimalist white line work piece with a muted toned feature colour. Comments (15)I have used Saatchi Art (saatchiart.com) to both browse and purchase art for our home. Original art work can be purchased and most artists have prints at a more affordable price. It's a good place to determine what styles and mediums you love as you can filter your search. For Australian art I love Blue Thumb (bluethumb.com.au). All Aussie and all original. Very few options for cost effective prints unfortunately. I'd be cautious about filling the space for an instant look. As everyone before me has said "art is personal" and as such, I think it should grow with you and your space. Start with one piece that you really love, big or small and work around that. I have found that putting unusual unexpected items on the wall makes for interesting 'art'. My husband's baby shoes (circa 1953) and now our children's first shoes are objects that always create conversation when guests come over. I have a Mexican art cross (we're not religious, the colours and the metal work drew me to it), a vintage wooden Indian spindle, African birds in a tree hand-beaten and cut from a steel drum, a clay mask my daughter made in art class, a woven Maori kit bag, some art that our kids have done at school (put into Ikea frames so they are always the right size. We change them as something else we love comes home), a hand-made ceramic tile, a growing collection of geckos found in antique stores, vintage travel posters in frames, (I'll stop listing what we have!)...all these items and more, have been collected over the last 20 years and put up around our collection of art or in clusters to create stories. I've collected the initials of our family (yes the child with the "K" is not thrilled it's so small and the child with the "G" feels he's by far the favourite! Needless to say both will be replaced in the future when a more appropriate size comes to light) from vintage stores both here and overseas. Our walls are a growing collection of art and objects and at any time I can move things around and change the composition as a new item is discovered. Comments (10)I'd go further , and be more brutal ! Right now , you have white walls , off white leather coaches , off white floor tiles ( in a lounge area -- cold , cold , cold IMO ) and a grey jute type rug . Do you dislike colour haha . DON'T go for blands -- go bright and big , again just my opinion . Hard to tell the wall sizes between windows , or what the rest of the room looks like , but how about this -- -- A couple of leafy plants around a metre tall , each in a suitable gloss glazed pot , matching colours in red or maroon or yellow or orange . -- A solid wood coffee table -- I'd buy a well used $10 one on an auction site , with chunks and knocks and worn corners . Varnish the top , paint the legs and cross bars in a mix of 50/50 paint and turps , to almost make it a stain . Go with a similar red/orange/ yellow as pots , BUT not a match . And when you are done painting , but before it is dry , add more paint so it is then 66-75% paint , and dab and rub some on using a sponge . -- Get a BIG picture -- 2metre by 1.5 . Similar but different colours to the above . Can't find one you are rapt with ? Go with close , get any left over coffee table 'stain' , and dab it on , streak it on , rub it in circles . Say you use orange , get some test pots in apricot and mid yellow and 3 shades of red . Repeat with them too , and/or thin them and suck them into syringes , and have fun squirting them across the picture . In other words , make or at least modify your own work of art original ! Theres nothing stopping you there either -- how about painting some small random offcuts of ply and gluing them on ? One or two bits of aluminium or stainless ? A rusty bit of tin ? A knife and fork ? Make it into a 3D multimedia piece ! ALL the above -- $1000 tops and a couple of days of fun !...See MoreArt work question
Comments (11)I think some shelving would look wonderful, keep the styling quite simple so that your eye doesn't get pulled away from the TV when you are trying to relax. A couple of floor plants either side of your entertainment unit would keep the electronics company and finish off the look quite nicely....See MoreYvonne
8 years agoLove the lightness of the room and the colours you've used on the bed. I would use a landscape art work, but a frameless print. Perhaps bigger than the pic shown but not quite as wide as bed head. Good luck!

8 years agoHere's a photo with small wall pictures and larger lamps above and below with a larger picture of course you would need to adapt your colours to match your cushions.

8 years agoDefinitely keep to the greys and yellows on the bed with unframed canvas prints (I like Susan Vale's flowers). You have a lot of choice with one, two or three pictures to all fit with the space of the bedhead. Whether you choose floral, landscape or abstract will depend on what is available in a suitable size and what you like. This will really bring some added life to your room.
Personally, I would be adding some soft white drapes to the window, I think the softening effect makes a bedroom more inviting. If you want the lamps to be a feature, yes larger ones would work better there
