Were the original plants Ficus by any chance? There are trees that you could use to fit in between those day beds like the newer mop tops - not the Robinia which suckers profusely. You dont want anything too big, just a small tree with a trunk and a canopy. I would put them in between the seats and at each end and you can keep the canopies trimmed. Ficus should NEVER be planted anywhere near homes, not even as street trees - their roots are just appalling. They are great in pots, but leave them there. Another option to consider would be the native Frangipani - Hymenosporum flavum. Do some research - its fun!

Nice clean lines. I agree it's a pity to remove beautiful foliage, but in a tropical location, these beautiful plants create a lot of work.

Gorgeous Mediterranean area, and I can imagine just how stunning it would be with a fire pit in winter time. To keep with the style, keep sun out yet avoid creating an enclosed feel shade cloth is the best way to go. If you wanted something easy to put up and take down, I agree a gazebo would work really well, like the one below: These are some DIY solutions - you can usually pick up these products from your local Bunnings, or learn more about them online. it depends on what the space will be built out of, how big, do you want the floor at the same height as inside or at ground level, how do you want to use the space, your climate, the inside rooms and do you want to connect the two spaces with wide opening doors.. what about shelter for wind and rain and bugs..do you want a roof and walls?? a simple pergola covered with shade cloth at ground level with some pavers could be the cheapest DIY option for a few thousand for materials and time and effort...anything more elaborate will be more expensive
