Indoor/outdoor entertaining area

We have an old house, 80-90 years old. We are looking at adding a deck for better entertaining flow. We would like this to have an outdoor feel but to be protected so that we can use it all year. the deck will need to be big enough for a large dining table as well as some outdoor lounges. what would be the most price efficient way of doing this?

The most price efficient way may ruin the feel of the existing 80-90 year old house which would be a shame.

Better to build something sympathetic even if it costs more. A painted timber framed veranda and deck area would be my choice without seeing any pictures of the existing house and site.

If you are doing a Hamptosn style renovation then I would be consistant, and play up the symmetry, such as in this photo. You really want the pool and outlook to be the focal point, and not your splashback. I would go with a mirrored splashback to brick more light into your space and provide a better connection with your pool, rather than making the splashback a feature element. I know you said that you don’t want to paint the brick but between the ceiling, brick and paving there is just so much brown hard surface which will work against your goal of a cosy feeling. Do you need to keep it fully roofed? I’d suggest some outdoor rugs, in a lighter colour, to define the seating and eating areas. Timber or wicker furniture def no glass or metal. And a lot of plants and greenery. To get comments of layout you need to post a sketch of the floor plan of the space with measurements.

it depends on what the space will be built out of, how big, do you want the floor at the same height as inside or at ground level, how do you want to use the space, your climate, the inside rooms and do you want to connect the two spaces with wide opening doors.. what about shelter for wind and rain and bugs..do you want a roof and walls?? a simple pergola covered with shade cloth at ground level with some pavers could be the cheapest DIY option for a few thousand for materials and time and effort...anything more elaborate will be more expensive
