I hate housework. I LOVE having a garden, even with my arthritic body I love getting out there and enjoying nature and those pesky weeds. Keeps me sane!

Would you rather a room of concrete or plywood?

We are yet to move into our new home. I like both of these products very much but not enough to use them through the entire house. We have beautiful blond plywood on our very high sloping ceiling in our living space; no nails or fixings visible and a narrow black shadow line between the gaps. we will be having concrete 'sexy floors' (Trade Name) in our studio and garage, a wonderful glossy finish that are absolutely non-toxic. Different patterns available.

Millboard has the durable flexible surface meaning that is absorbs impact rather than marking the surface. Dogs/chairs seem to have no issue marking. It is the most expensive because it is not a wood/plastic composite, it is a Polyurethane blend and has no timber. The Millboard does not let off any odour and is very similar in heat on the surface as a timber deck however it does cool down quicker. See below Millboard Smoked Oak used at London Zoo in Lion cage.

Homes don't have to be made low maintenance - regular cleaning keeps a home maintenance free. Cleaning as you go or regular dusting and vacuuming keeps housework minimal so nothing is a huge effort. Squeegee the shower after use for minimum cleaning for example. If you don't have a place to store everything, then maybe look at just what you are trying to store and how much you really need. I can't visualise "hidden" areas that accumulate junk, maybe they should become storage areas so necessary "junk" can be stored neatly.

Weeds can be kept to a minimum in gardens with mulching, which is also good for water retention, most trees need regular pruning and drop leaves and twigs regardless of whether they are evergreen or not so they aren't exactly non-maintenance, sure there are a lot of plants that need little watering if one is short on water, but that is good for the environment too. Specific plots for vegetables is a sound investment or flowering plants just to pretty up the garden are not a lot of work and if water is readily available a sprinkler system can take the drudge out of that. The garden is good therapy for reducing stress and if approached that way can only benefit our lives.

We put an enormous amount of effort into having a low maintenance garden - it was completely worth it. Our house on the other hand, will always require work. We are not fans of the 'nobody lives here' look.

A garden without much apart from a few trees and lots of lawn, isn't really low maintenance as it requires regular mowing, edging and whipper snipping to keep it that way. We're moving to raised garden beds that we can sit on to weed and plant, to save our ageing backs.
As for a house which has large bare surfaces, with nothing out of place, that doesn't feel like a comfortable home. I want to be able to do my crafts and leave them to come back to when I have to go out. I also have many collected items over a lifetime, which are nice to look at and touch and use, now that we're retired. Sharing experiences with grandchildren is special.

since we are too busy..hubby knocked up these planter boxes for me..and installed a dripper system no need to remember to water them now it does it on a timer..just have to weed that's all.. our little patch of greenery..
