Such great suggestions from Julie, I think the key with natives is that they're quite sparse, so risk looking ratty and messy very easily. To counteract that, it's important to plant en masse, and only stick to natives (so remove the roses), so cluster say 3 of the same plant together for impact, and repeat with half a dozen types of different shapes/colours/textures/heights. The great pictures Julie has shown such as this one below that I love, show this done really well with mixing texture and colour - spiky, strappy broad leaves (deep green), soft fine leaves (grey green). Then these lower plantings can make your larger trees (existing) look more balanced. Of course, I don't know your location/climate with the suggestions below, so speak to your nursery... Use the existing larger feature trees (not sure whether you want to keep the existing tree in front of the house depending on its shape/proximity to the house), but your bottlebrush etc are great) then arrange the others around each of them to create a couple of nice focal point and more impact. Try westringia, lomandra, native violet, acacia limelight, dianella... Add in a beautiful Gymea Lily as a statement piece too if suitable climatically. And being a corner block it would be nice to plant more along the side/corner to delineate your property a little more nicely. Maybe replace the agapanthus with a row of woolly bush or even water gum (planted further away from the house at the side. It might even be worth getting a landscaper in to help with arranging them, perhaps ask at your local nursery, and then you do all the dirty work - actual marking out, digging and planting yourself.

Thanks for the info Nicole. As a landscape designer I'm always interested in learning what people are thinking and their reasons for/against engaging a professional to help. I understand your reluctance to contact a local landscaper because you're right, they often don't have design knowledge. That's not something everyone is aware of, and it's all too common for people to just do some "landscape work" without a plan. This leads to unpredictable and often disappointing results. I realise not everyone is able to find someone in their area who can help with design, which is why I offer a design at a distance service. While visiting the site in person can have it's advantages, a lot can be achieved remotely. Maybe have a look at my profile and see if anything catches your eye. Whatever you decide, I hope your project goes well!

I really feel for you. I had a similar experience when a neighbour recommended someone she knew who was 'really good'! He was extremely lazy and, apparently, suffering from depression and he had split up with his girlfriend! He did a dreadful job which took a week - because he was too depressed to work on some days - he only did about half the job and I wasn't impressed. It has ruined my relationship with my neighbour because she knew him to be really good. She won't even come into my place - I assume she doesn't want to see the mess he created! To top it all off (I had paid him cash - fortunately only half of what he 'wanted' (not 'earned') so he wouldn't be paying tax on it )- I didn't get a receipt. He also took my house keys so I had to have the locks replaced. Such a mess and then, I had some tradies through a couple of weeks later for an unrelated job and they asked me when I was getting the place painted? When I told them it had just been done, they really didn't know where to look. I seem to constantly get ripped off, so I'm not getting much done any more - too expensive and depressing.

I don't want to lecture , just pointing out some things I've noticed -- Often , 2 things that look the same on-line are quite different when you see them side by side -- different quality , different materials , etc . That's where buying from somewhere trustworthy is important . And sale prices are complicated . Some businesses have a high recommended price , but almost always have 20% or 50% off sales -- they get what they want $$$ wise , but you think you have gotten 1 over them . Other places have genuine sales to clear last seasons stock . Others only sell their unsellable stuff on sale -- in other words , theres a reason it is cheap . Still others need the $$$ , and you are getting a genuine bargain , but they mightn't be there in 6 months time . Not too bad for a rug , but not great for a car or TV . Basically , the best quality , sought after stuff from known suppliers is almost never 'on sale' . I pick out what I want , weigh up the options , and decide on the day who gets my $$$ from that point .
