Metal door frames or timber architrave?

Here in Western Australia most of our houses have the standard plain metal door frame installed which we (husband & I) find unattractive!

The metal frames are practical but not very pretty and they cause damage to you walls if you try to remove them so we designed a rebated timber architrave to cover and hide the metal one.

SO which do you prefer, metal frame or rebated timber architrave?

Aluminium windows have come a long way. Their thermal properties are excellent and the range of colours is extensive (some companies more than others, so look around). Door hardware varies too, if this is a consideration. Timber would require more upkeep. I had timber in my previous three homes, and now have aluminium and they are the far superior product. Shop around and pay particular attention to thermal benefits as you compare. Best wishes.

Daniel Lindahl - I didn't say to get rid of it - I just said to change it for something else - I have a 70's home owner built - cavity brick - Daniel sometimes it is working with what you have in order to keep costs down - paintings - if you have several - can be changed around your home for a interesting look - as our homes are our homes - the paintings - can always be shared in various rooms/walls to suit ones mood.

Timber or aluminium windows for 1950s home?

There is an inherent charm to timber-framed windows due to the proportions of the frame. There are lots of different styles of aluminium windows, but most of them do not have the same proportions - they usually have a much thinner frame, and often look cheap and flimsy. The other problem with most aluminium windows is that they conduct heat and cold which usually negates the benefits of double glazing. If you are firm about going with aluminium windows then consider thermally broken window frames, which have better proportions and don't transfer the heat or cold through the frames. They don't look cheap, as they are not! Also check out the hybrid windows which are powder-coated aluminium on the outside and timber on the inside. https://www.miglas.com.au/aliclad If budget is an issue and it doesn't stretch to thermally-broken aluminium of hybrid timber/aluminium windows then go with timber for the warmth and character. Metal is good for security where there are locks. Do they have them in WA because of termites, or because metal is mined there, or some other reason?

my son had an accident at school where he cracked his head on one.

Is usual in houses in Vic and Nsw to have wood. Had an exterior metal one in a flat in Nsw. That was a fire rated door, of course.

Our architrave is a decorative cover for internal metal door frames so security isn't a problem. Originally the metal frames were installed because of White Ant, similar to a termite but it's not really problem anymore so really there is no reason to not install wooden frames. It seems to be the standard over here in WA almost every house has metal frames they are even installing them in to the new builds.

I had heard that how2girl. I am trying to do some more research on 2016 statistics for WA. It looks like most hardwoods are naturally resistant to white-ant and apparently they don't like MDF much because of the glue content. The data and statistics that I have found so far seem to be from 1995 & 2004. We did look in to this before we decided to manufacture the architraves and MDF was the better option. We do offer timber though as well.

We've had MDF architraves fashioned in the same profile as our existing (Californian bungalow) archs & have also used it for window ledges. Once it's painted can't tell it's not the original. No problems with termites (x).

Nice work! You can also glue strips to the door itself to give the appearance of a paneled door if you prefer that look.

What a brilliant solution. The house I am considering purchasing has metal architraves in every room and I was not looking forward to removing them all and repairing any damage before replacing with mdf. My door heights are 2250 - can you custom make? The link to your website is not working can you please provide me with one. TIA
