Help me pick outdoor lights

I live in a circa 1969 dark brown brick home. It is probably best described as Italian in style (picture attached). I want to bring it into more of a mid-century vibe.

You can probably see the existing light fittings, which are incredibly dated.

I was thinking of replacing with these brass fittings from Beacon, but they are on the pricier side and I'm not sure if they will cast enough light. Any thoughts? Would I be better to go with a charcoal (to match in with the stack stone) or perhaps black?

I would pick black or charcoal definitely, don't know about style , anything you like but not brass.

I'd also say charcoal, I think the brass may work against what you're trying to achieve.

It does all depend on your wall colour and other furnishings in the room, but I'd suggest to go on the lighter side Pauline, given that there is not a great deal of contrast in your kitchen, it is best to stay monochromatic. Something like Dulux Sandy Day or Beige Royal have a warmth and depth about them but not too dark. Please ensure you look at a glass sample of the colour, as this can vary greatly from the paint sample. Good luck and be sure to let us know how you got on

If it has no varnish, light sand then oil. If varnished very good sand using a electric sander, medium first sand then finer the second sand, wipe down to get all dust off then oil. If you use a combo of linseed and turpentine make sure you use gum turpentine. Use more turpentine to start off as will penetrate the wood better. Good luck

I'd say your 1969 house is pretty much mid-century. It carries on the clean horizontals and rectangles and large windows and flat expanses of wall that architects were promoting to house builders in the 50s and 60s. The style had been introduced earlier by progressive/innovative architects.

So if you want to change light fittings or anything else you could choose to stick with those guidelines. Look for light fittings that fit with that aesthetic: plain contours, straight lines; one colour or a strong contrast; 'honest' materials (metal, wood, glass, stone); stark sculptural shapes (in gardening too). The more you look online at pics and ads from the 1960s the more guidance you'll get.

Hi Kristen! Yes to the downlighter but no to the brass sorry : ( The other metals I can see on your facade are aluminium (ie silver/grey) in the windows and white painted steel or iron on the railing. So I would pick from either of those. White lights would look pretty naff imho, so am suggesting silver/grey- anodised aluminium or stainless steel. A stainless or aluminium uplighter/downlighter [as per @Asquithoakley's third pic] would look good on the garage wall as the fixture is down low enough for uplighting to look great. Downlighter-only version of that would look good upstairs as the fixtures are up high. Both would wash the bricks with light and create lovely depth and pattern.

Like the second one or the first in stainless steel- the black wont show up on the dark brown brick

Thanks all for the advice. I ended up with some sleek / simple silver lights from masters. They are up/ down lights and look fantastic by night.
