In this new "how often do you" series, we'll be asking about the frequency of certain home habits. We're kicking it off with this question, which has sparked controversy and some horrified sideways glances in our office:

How often do you change your sheets?

It's not only a hygiene consideration, but health, skincare and comfort come into play here. Tell us your answer below, and reasons why it may be more/less frequent...

Weekly all year round. I used to change the kids beds at the same time, but I now leave it to them to do it (hello? They're 25 & 22!) so I only wash their sheets every 3-4 weeks when they bother to change them. *shudder* Not what I prefer but that's their choice!

I aim to do it weekly....if my week goes pear shaped it may be fortnightly...anything longer feels totally gross!

I love to change soft furnishings and some decorative items in our family room and master bedroom for summer/winter. In summer I have a lot of white/sand/soft blues with a beachy theme: blue glass, seashells - light and bright. Winter brings out the reds/orange/fuchsias etc. Some of the wall artwork is also changed. I just change the cushion covers, and things like bed linen/bedspread etc. Also the wall decoration behind the bed to tone with the new theme. I don't go out and buy new stuff as I find this method very refreshing ... and it seems 'new' each season! I should add that I have neutral backgrounds and furnishings so that I can do this easily. Even greenery and different floral arrangements enhance the respective themes.

Never ever used sponges - And I've been a house and garden maintenance dudette for over four decades!! I have never owned a bucket and mop either ... I have a dozen or so purpose bought facecloths instead of sponges and the like (in a colour that ties in with the kitchen accent colour) The "facecloths" are used and are allowed to dry out for about two days ... then machine-washed with the bathtowels and dried outdoors. M My current "turquoisey" kitchen facecloths are still going strong after 12 years!! For pots, oven and casserole dishes, etc. I use stainless steel scourers - with a softer stainless steel flat scourer for non-stick stuff. The scourers - as well as the kitchen sink drains - get spray-sanitized with a no-smell 1or2% strength bleach after every use!

Gioenne I can't say as I'm worse than you.. though when it gets dirty it gets changed regardless hubby don't care less...me I can think of better things to do than change sheets..

his idea is that when I'm not home the sheets has my scent..so I try not to change them before I leave for Geelong..

if I change them then I have to do it straight away when I'm home so there's a scent for him when I leave :)

Once or twice a week is what I aim for depending on the weather and how much time I have... But can stretch to a fortnight.

Every one to two weeks, depending on if my husband is away and how my hot flushes go. Couldn't imagine changing them more than once a week even in summer. I do air our bed and our bedroom basks in the sun in the afternoon so I often don't make it until later in the day for that reason.

Fortnightly during winter. Aim for weekly during summer, but it doesn't always happen.

I've seen this question posted on another forum. And I'm pleased all the answers here fall within a reasonable range. On the other forum the answers made my skin crawl.

Ha! Sue, when I was at home my mum would do the same. The state those sheets got sometimes with fake tan etc... Boy oh boy.

Are we talking just sheets or quilt cover as well, I hate changing quilt cover unless there's someone to help, king size is getting harder to manage.

Fortnightly in Winter...weekly in summer. Quilt cover about once every 2 months as we use a top sheet. If we go away, I MUST return to fresh sheets.

Agree cloudpants, have a top sheet - quilt cover every couple of months. I have a good technique for getting quilt cover on, but needs two people. We have a king cover as well.

We have a super king doona and I've hand sewn 5 ribbon loops to the inside top of the cover (just above the seam so it doesn't show on the outside), and one midway on each side. I've then sewn ribbon ties to the corresponding points on doona itself. By tying them together, it makes washing and changing covers a breeze, not to mention keeping the doona in place. Like others, I use a top sheet as well, so my cover is washed probably every two months or so... (Depends whether the cat throws up on it - it's been washed twice this week so far! )
