Getting the toilet out of the bathroom

I would like to take our toilet out of the bathroom for practical reasons but cannot relocate it immediately next to the bathroom. Is this too weird? Should I leave it in the bathroom and just add a second toilet in the alternate location? Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi there, coming from the UK I am used to having the loo in the same room as the bath and shower. However, having lived in and designed numerous homes in Australia I can also see the appeal of a separate WC.

It depends on how much space you have. If things are a bit tight then a loo in the bathroom is much more practical. If you have a bigger family and a few kids, then it can be useful to be able to pop to the toilet if someone is using the shower or taking a bath.

If you do go for a separate 'powder room' located elsewhere, be sure to include a hand wash basin and a mirror in there too (even if it is really small). There is nothing worse than touching the handle of a toilet knowing that every single person who used it before you did so without even washing their hands (!). It also makes it a lot more saleable further down the track.

Have you got a plan of your layout? I might be able to suggest some solutions?

i agree with Architect Yourself..an extra toilet is so much more convenient and there should be a handbasin.. i also like a deep mirrored wall and/or floor cabinet for extra toilet rolls, cleaning products and handtowels and, as long as the toilet has at least two properly closing doors to a kitchen and public rooms, it can be located anywhere that's convenient..we have an extra toilet and handbasin just inside the back door and it works very well as a guest toilet from inside and outside BTW unless you really need the space for something else and are planning a major bathroom reno, keep the old toilet in the bathroom and add a separate powder room as well

Absolutely doable. Will cost you more however maybe worth it as you probably will not be happy with layout if you don't and this means $1000's of dollars wasted.,

Nik Star, I’m jealous of your bigger space ; ) - but so happy you have now been reacquainted with your messing tape! We are toying with the idea of putting a cavity slider in. Thank you Ripple Effekt Siriuskey - yes I really LOVE the concept of a “wet room” - Never imagined that our space was big enough for this but now seeing it’s possible, thinking about trying the bath under the window, then the shower and then vanity on the bottom left corner - just flipping yours slightly. Just trying to find a good bath that’s narrower design to allow for the biggest vanity possible. You are all awesome!

Hi AndrewJason, I love cavity sliders. they are there when you want them but not visible when you need the space open. Having said that they cost more, take a bit of wreckage to set up and in you WA case you will be wrecking brick walls to put them in which might be a stretch of mess too far. BUT you will need to weigh up if they are worth it in the end. I do not think the build will be too bulky in the kitchen/dining because it will be superbly practical on both sides and it maybe just a matter of what you are used to. Not sure about "Average Joe...…" we are all good at somethings, mine is plans, function, practicality, solar. Yours might be brain surgery, empathy for unwell folks, kinda or you make the best seafood lasagne in the world... we are all needed to make for a great world: and it really is that!!! Good luck with your splendid home: I think it is beautiful. And PS if you do make the best seafood anything I better have your address....!!!!!!! MK

Is there a reason why the kitchen is where it is? I would change the kitchen to be on the left looking out to the deck, then dining and living, all looking out to the deck, and put bedrooms where the kitchen is. Then the bedroom occupants would have some privacy, instead of having to walk past visitors in the lounge or dining to use the toilet or bathroom. You have noted that the red walls are existing, so I assume all other areas can be changed

Thank-you Architect Yourself and oklouise. It is sometimes hard to see the forest for the trees and a little objective feedback is extremely helpful. I think I will leave the toilet where it is and add a separate powder room. Now to the issue of shower over bath.......
