Both are lovely but obviously won't provide any cover over winter. I also find my amalanchier is very early to lose it's leaves as soon as autumn starts (although looks beautiful with red and yellow leaves for a time before it does). If you don't mind another deciduous how about a red cherry tree?

Thank you thank you Jen, realised I'd not added the pictures.. I'm thinking of multistem trees so that even when the trees lose their leaves, the branches will add a different focal point to my neighbours kitchen..

due to the different levels, my property is about 4' higher, any shrubs would need to grow quite tall to cover my view of their window. I don't want to shut them out. Also, my town has taken to putting red robin along the sides of the duel carriageway...put me off having them in my garden

Hi Caroline, it is a good idea about the threes. Meanwhile before they are tall enough to separate you from your neighbours I would recommend to lift up your fence in front of their kitchen. The best it would be some kind of climbing plant extension. Hope they will like this idea...

Marcin, I have seen a Rowlinson one some time ago but it appears to be discontinued- replaced with this one,

I can currently store two bins, one in front of the other and still open my garage door so I believe it's wide enough.

A common trick to save some pennies, if you are considering multi-stems, is to use 2 or 3 standard trees of a smaller size planted together in the same hole. Quite often you will find this works out cheaper and can improve availability. Doesn't work for all varieties as some don't like the competition, Silver birch don't mind it. Best to ask supplier if in doubt.

I'm hoping that some fairly mature multi stem trees will nicely add some other focus to looking directly at the side of another house. I don't look in their kitchen, just can't help it as it's right across from my back door.

Have you thought about a pleached hedge? It will give you instant vertical screening without taking up much space on your driveway. You could choose hornbeam or Photinia Red Robin and underplant with box or grasses.

The hedge would have to be quite high to screen my neighbours kitchen. This is my view as I walk out of my back door.

due to the sun position, all the sun comes from the left back (right in this pic) of the house so I have to be careful I don't block out that sun.

I think some bare root Chinese or Himalayan Birch planted to form multi stem or bought as small multi stem would work best here. Pleached trees are lovely but very formal, costly to buy and maintain.
Birch also provide great winter cover as they have many small twiggy branches and the Chinese birch keep their leaves till late, mine lost theirs only last week.
