Hi N R, I am so glad you are going to remove them, yours are small at the moment so it will be a bit easier , once they get large they are terrible to eradicate, the stumps are so big that it becomes a huge job, I know we were advised to put them in when we were in drought but they really are not the best choice for our garden as they get out of control so quickly and just seem to grow huge in a matter of moments , what looked like this lovely looking plant has grown into a giant huge monster with a trunk to match.

Hi El, painting room white would instantly brighten it, if you are buying new furniture as you said, try a lighter colour sofa, Scotchgard against any spills from the kids, light coloured rugs, a floating tv unit creates a more spacious feel, and I love the built in shelves and storage for the little ones which you could use later for your precious items.
