Also have a dual purpose room. We did inexpensive white shelving units around two walls, with fabric boxes to stash stuff, (office, and my "crafty" supplies), threw in a few decorative items. Got a tall basket for rolled up mats/foam roller storage, a complementary lower basket to throw in the requisite elastic bands, small hand weights, etc. Decorated walls with pics from our travels, framed with colored mats.

Thank you I visited a few stores in Sydney , bo concepts, king furniture , project 82 and finally jimmy possum and decided on the Massimo and Milmo sofa with ottoman from jimmy possum, many reasons, not only because of the impeccable quality of the sofas and the fact it's Austrlaian made, but after visiting the store twice my husband would fall asleep instantly whilst sitting on them, and that to me was the clincher. From what you have said, I think smaller separate pieces such as couch and chair(s) rather than a large sectional is likely to work better in the space and still allow for traffic flow. However, if you still have lots to do then don't rush to make large purchases. In the meantime, if your current sectional looks better pulled away from the wall a bit, then perhaps you could rotate the side table so that the long side runs parallel with the sofa arm instead of the wall. Would that help to stop it blocking the doorway and resolve the 'not quite right' placement?
