I agree about the brick;it's very nice. I also like the green and cream and wheat shades-just not all three! Picking up the green will incorporate your lampost, and might look nice on the fence and porch posts.I like the idea of cream elsewhere, as it is natural and warm -like your other materials -but still fresh. Pretty property.

there is a beautiful green painted cali bungalow up the road from me, it has a dark green roof and the weatherboards are done in a paler green, with a darker green around the windows and trim. It sounds funny but it looks really lovely, all about the tones of green. I do think the grey white combo is beautiful too, and don't think it will make house look cold, its quite a subtle colour scheme. I have seen period houses painted those colours and they look really nice. Thinking of repainting our Californian bungalow in that combination, we have a dark red roof though, so I may go with a bluish grey?,

Hi our 1920's Californian bungalow is painted in Dulux Half Haast, which the previous owners painted about 3 years ago. We want to repaint the window frames and the shingles (which are a mid blue colour), but the weatherboards are in primo condition so we will work around the Half Haast colour. I'd like a charcoal or dark grey on the shingles, and repaint a classic white on the window frames. Does anyone know what Dulux dark grey would go best with Half Haast? At the moment the shingles are a mid blue which makes the Half Haast look more yellow based than grey, so I want to get well away from that and bring the grey tones out of the Half Haast. I'd also like to paint the front and back doors a near black or darker grey than the shingles, if you have any thoughts on that. Thanks heaps!

The issue is not so much the cladding material, but rather the articulation of the extended building form. This could be a simultaneously exciting, interesting and sympathetic extension utilising shingle cladding that wouldn't necessarily reference Hampton's. If there's anything too Hamptons going on here it's the small proportioned windows with the external shutters that give it a bit of a "dollhouse"popped on the top look. You've got a stunning beautiful home frontage, but the extension form is kind of sticking out/up the back and the fenestration looks out of balance by being perfectly symmetrical. Federation architecture is not symmetrical like the Victorian era predecessors, rather it is an asymmetric compositional balance that in your case should be recognised and countered appropriately with the design of the extension. When selecting appropriate extended cladding material it should be working towards texturally balancing the building and being complimentary overall. Professional recommendation you revisit the articulation of the upper extension, at the very least loosening up the fenestration with more glazing and potentially a more complex roof form with a smaller projecting gable (offset) as a reference to the frontage. The cladding choice becomes less critical, and shingle texture that ties in the roofing texture could work well. Weatherboard is bringing something new in, and if you go flush panel without a more contemporary design and articulation it will look wrong Good luck PD :) www.pauldistefanodesign.com
