Industrial Chic: Polished Concrete Floors - Yes or No
Comments (10)Hi bagpu55, thanks for your comment, you will find that the level of scratches that come through on the sealer will depend on the type of gloss sealer used. Polyurethane or solvent based sealers last a lot longer and are much more durable, even with animals present. Having said this, the negatives are that solvent based products take some time for the strong smell to escape in a confined environment and are not the most eco-friendly of products. And eventually the scratches will come through particularly in high traffic areas. As for the dust, the gloss will show it a bit more. Based on the fact that you do have a number of animals in your home, you probably will not regret going with the matt finish. The concrete won’t have the ‘wet’ shinny look, but you also won’t be sitting on your couch possibly looking at a lot of scratches on the floor when the light hits it just so. A possible compromise is a satin finish sealer. It will provide some shine and enhancement to the floor without showing as many scratches. I hope this helps you out a bit. Good luck with your choice and post some pics of what your finished floor looks like. Always great to see the finished product!...See Moreneed help with flooring choice
Comments (1)You definitely need to go for practicality not something that will always look dirty and create work. We have honed tiles, with a matte dull appearance in our laundry which I just love. Our laundry is a walk through to garage and back door so gets loads of traffic and it never looks dirty. Its great I sweep or vac it daily and mop once a week because I know it needs doing not because it looks dirty. It always looks good our's are a bluey grey colour. Very forgiving, when I purchased them the guy told me people were also using them around pools because they are non slip. Check them out. They maybe more suited to busy family areas We have polished porcelain tiles in a bathroom on the floor and wall they are beautiful and because they are in a small area they probably are a bit forgiving. I think in a large area with heaps of traffic and light from windows ect they may show every mark with such a polished appearance. The last thing you want is to be spending your time cleaning floors. Your in the right place to get heaps of feed back from the tried & tested....See MoreHoned and polished concrete floors
Comments (2)With a level issue like that- you are either going to need to grind it right down by 30mm (all good if you want aggregate exposed, but tricky if you don't know how thick the original slab is), or lay a topping slab on top of what you already have. These topping slabs can be like Pangea (thinner 5-6mm) or thicker regular concrete (40-50mm). The regular concrete is cheaper and you pay by the cube (m3). You then need to pay to have it ground and polished....anything from $50-70m2. Polished concrete is not a cheap option. You might want to look at concrete-look tiles, that way your tiler can make the level adjustments....See MoreHelp with concrete flooring to tiled bathroom
Comments (10)I would recommend going a darker colour too! We have done it several times with clients who (like yourself) can't see what the finished concrete aggregate will look like until afterwards and the darker the better we have found. Like Zaffa said, it would be amazing if you could extend the concrete into the bathroom, as that can be absolutely beautiful and this aggregate look is a fantastic addition to a bathroom. However if you want to break it up I would go for a dark charcoal (large format) tile so you don't risk clashing colours. Darker bathrooms are really stylish so you don't risk sacrificing on style. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need any help selecting specific tiles as we know how overwhelming it can be and are happy to help. Best of Luck, Jordan from JFI Studios!...See MoreUser
