Could the treadmill go in a garage (or ebay) if you don't use it? I like Becky's ideas, and I'd also look to get a new chair for the desk, possibly a dsw eames style one, a rug on the floor and an armchair by the window for reading. How about a chalkboard above your desk too?

I too would get rid of the running machine to a garage or Ebay if not used. Paint the radiator cover as it does not match the flooring, doors or window sills,. Also, paint the bookcases and desk for the same reason. The chair could do with being a little less office like and the whole look softened a wee bit.

Greens work well in study's and will go very nicely with your wood. The crisp white of the bookcases and desk would offer up a nice bright contrast.

I think wallpaper would look good too :) A simple stripe would keep it feeling like a study, but choose whatever you love!

Love the wall paper idea. You could take the back off the bookcases and paper that wall, you would see the paper above the desk and beyond the books!

If you're unsure or indecisive about paint colour or wall paper, what about picking a feature wall and decorating it with artwork, pictures, memo boards? Adding personal quirky touches can make a room feel really roomy and if you change your mind or get bored it can easily be taken off.

Adding accent lighting and decor can also help spruce up a room, since you're not really using this room as an office maybe a floor lamp to help fill space?

So, so far..... wallpaper or paint I still have to decide (I am leaning towards paper at the moment), a plant, take out the threadmill, paint the radiator cover ( or maybe take it out of the room altogether??), move the desk down towards the window and put two bookcases side by side, a rug, new desk chair.....how does all that seem?

So, the function of the room is to store books? It will not be used for an office? Is that correct?

Will the treadmill and the clothes hanger be removed?

I store books and dry clothes there. In the winter months I will need the room to dry clothes. I use the threadmill a bit during the winter months too and don't really have anywhere else to put it. I could put it in a bedroom but am i then just cluttering up another room? My husband uses the room a little bit to do a small amount of work (book-keeping, household bills etc.)

As long as you have a treadmill and a clothes dryer in the space, I can't recommend wallpapering a wall.

Also, the wall that makes sense papering is the window wall. If the room arrangement works out the way I suggested, that wall will be mostly filled by the window and the bookcases.

Also, I wouldn't recommend even thinking about wallpapering or any other art, paint, etc until you have the room arrangement set.

Do you watch tv, use an ipad or other device when on the treadmill? Reason I ask is that the space would look better with the front of the treadmill facing the wall with the door. But, if you'd rather look out the window, it could face the window.

No, I just listen to music Claire so I don't really to look out the window, i prefer the room to look nice!

I'd put it facing the wall that the door is on.

and put it at the wall where the desk is now or the wall where the radiator is now?

It should be on the wall where the desk is now. It should be moved all the way down to meet the wall with the door. This way, it will be least visible when entering the room.

i quite like the layout of your desk add shelving as it is. Perhaps adding a fly shelf to connect the two shelves and if possible, add a couple of integrated downlights. The picture posted by Jen above looks lovely and balanced. I think if you move the desk in front of the window you are going to block out a lot of light . I too would paint the radiator cover and if you could re-house the treadmill you could perhaps add a small reading chair into the corner. The desk area could benefit from a smaller chair too as suggested . I'd drop the height of your three canvases also . If you are thinking of changing your blind, you could have a roller or Roman blind on the outside of the window. If you positioned it quite a bit higher than your window recess height, you could have it pulled down just enough to cover the top of the recess. It would give the illusion of a larger window, look stylish and you wouldn't lose any light either.

Thanks Period Property Store. They all look cooool, my problem is the wood trim (board) I have all around the room. The pictures you show have all white or a grey trim around the room. Have you got anything that you think might suit a wooden board?
