I have found that some councils have the original plans and some don't. Its always a good thing to keep and add it your deeds as is any further alterations and additions made. Even paint colours and the like. However the original plans may not show any structural details. This is of little consequence anyway as builders knock out structural walls and the like fairly regularly. Sometimes engineering advise isn't even needed. Your house may even have a truss roof where the external walls are the structural components and the internal walls are non structural. Even when I do get the original plans of a dwelling I'm doing work on I will still measure the house up. Who knows what may have been changed during construction... Have a local designer/architect/draftsman have a look at the potential of a dwelling as they'll should have a solid knowledge of local council and state legislation, building codes, etc.. They can also advise of structural details as well.
