White Knight also have a laminate paint but any semi gloss or gloss enamel paint works just as well. The key to a good finish is the preparation; clean thoroughly to remove any grease/oil, fill any dents & areas where laminate is chipped, reglue any loose edge strips, sand, wipe clean with methylated spirits, apply an oil based undercoat, leave to dry overnight, lightly sand with very fine (black) sandpaper, apply 1st top coat, leave to dry for at least 24 hours, if necessary very lightly sand, apply final top coat then leave to cure for a few days before rehanging. Recommend painting backs & fronts, the best finish will be achieved by removing the doors, catches & handles. Use a low nap small roller. Alternatively, if you're quite experienced with a spray gun, you can paint more doors in one session as long as you have a clean dust free space to set them out. Hi all, as a Painter of 30 plus years i am a bit old fashioned and still love oil based enamel, i think the problem is we tend to compare the two finishes when it is impossible for them to be the same. We have used many of the leading name brands and some Bio products the Solver/Wattyl have been the best finish in my opinion but they do take a special touch to get a smooth finish. The key being to apply and finish as you go and don't over work and we have found a much better finish is achieved by three to four coats especially with whites and light colours. When going over oil enamel your preparation is the key, the Zinnser products are great for this. We did a large home with 300mm high skirting's and 3 metre high paneled doors I chose to spray finish this project with HVLP spray equipment, it came out beautiful and had a good gloss retention. It is the only time i have really been happy with these products. But as we head to more environmentally friendly products i think we just have to get on board and remember it's a totally different finish.

Hi MaxCC, Your 'artwork' is called a wall niche. As far as I know, they were originally used to display religious icons, such as The Virgin Mary. I'm not religious but I do admit that I have a special love for wall niches. I have used them twice in homes that I've built as a place to display my 'Lamplighter' Lladro, so that he is on display to guest. The niches were always placed just inside the front entrance as yours is. Sadly I don't have any photos to show you, as we have just moved house and everything is still in storage. My suggestion, to help you with how to display the object that you will put into your niche, would be to keep the wall itself neutral but paint the niche in a metallic paint. Your want the object on display to be the item of greatest interest and the metallic paint [Resene have some wonderful colours to chose from] will help to draw your eye to that space.
