first reaction is to suggest that unless there is gorgeous view to the west and/or you live in a very cold climate that can use hot late afternoon sun i would reduce or eliminate the window on the western wall of the family room and where do the doors from the kitchen lead to? what is the space between the kitchen and the family sitting area? and do you really need 4 m of linen storage and only 1.7m for the study area?...would love to see a floor plan to make more specific suggestion for the tv

we do live in an environment which is cold and there is a bit of view to the west which I don't want to eliminate.

Space is for the dining table or an eating area....haven't figure that out yet...

I want a lot of storage thus the 3 m linen.

late western afternoon sun in a cold climate is great and twin lounge chairs plus a lounge in either position will allow for flexible arrangements to suit different activities and times of the year and always prefer the TV not to be the centre of attention entering a room

Your Position 2 is set up similarly to mine. Our TV is on the west wall, with a glass door directly on its left, a sliding glass door on its right, and a very wide glass sliding door on the north wall. Depending on the time of day, how bright it is outside and season, it's necessary for us to either close the external blinds (they eliminate glare but are not block-out) partially or fully. From the picture of your house, it looks like a fair amount of light will enter the room. I think determining best position will also depend upon how deep your eaves are. If fairly deep, Position 1 would be what I would choose, but would still have to close the blinds/curtains on the north wall and possibly west wall. Reason I asked if your TV will be mounted on the wall, is because it so, you will need to instruct builder exactly where to put extra noggins in the wall (you may already know this).

I have to agree the study nook seems too small. Will only one person use it at a time? Do you have a study already?

Yes we do have a seperate study room

Ahh, then the study nook might be used for menu planning, grocery lists, hubby to-do lists, laptop work, etc. Now I see the reason for smaller area. Will you have a benchtop and any cabinets in study nook? Sorry, I'm just curious and interested!

This is very similar to our floor plan (yet to start building) ... same as you we have our backyard to the north, kitchen to the east, dining table in the middle, lounge to the west.

And we had the exact same dilemma where to put the couches.

We decided on position 1 but in an L shape with a couch along the west wall and north wall. And we will have two arm chairs or ottomans in your couch position 2.

We decided on this because it feels more open and didn’t want the TV to be a main focal point. Don’t necessarily want to see the back of the couch either.

We had the same feeling. Thus we wanted to put in position 1. Recently, a friend pointed me out about the glare on the TV.

Anyways, I think when it's built, it will give a better view.

Yes you may get glare with north backyard. In our case we will have a large alfresco creating shade, and you can always close the blinds if it’s too sunny.

I think you may still get glare the other way too.

Position 2 will have less glare on the TV and if you are in the kitchen you should be able to glance over to watch news etc. Also, with the sofa in position 1, the sun on one side of your face could be annoying when watching tv . A low backed sofa with a hall table behind it would look good in position 2.

When sitting to watch TV, I'd like my back to be to the kitchen, so I'd prefer #2.

Do you need a TV in this area? Once there is noise in the kitchen the TV will be turned up to compensate and the noise will bounce back to the kitchen. Position 2 makes the TV the dominant feature. Go for position 1 and get a TV that can swivel. Then it can be adjusted for any glare at different times of the day. Putting something in sofa position 2 will help block/break the noise too.
