I like it, Vanessa! And I think the thickness of shelf in photo perfectly balances the size of the shelf. I too have no overheads and blank wall to right of my rangehood. I want two spotted gum floating shelves, but hubby isn't convinced. But I will persevere. Ha! Pls post updated photos as you progress with the job. Look forward to seeing the result!

If you want to make the house hotter, then painting the roof charcoal will certainly achieve that. Repointing the brickwork is the most sensible from a maintenance perspective. Once you render and paint, then you have to keep painting (and it's likely to be out of fashion sooner or later). Try to keep passive cooling in mind (i.e. light colours & permeable landscaping) with any of your renovations, and I think it always pays to try and embrace and compliment the original architecture and be unique, rather than trying to look like the latest project home. In my opinion the arch window is actually quite cool, and the excellent mock-ups provided by Geo Toria are along the right track.

You can buy the arch and corbels from a plaster supplier. You then need a builder to frame out the arch. They’ll rip off some of the existing plaster and frame out the arch in wood. You’ll then need a plasterer to cut and apply new plaster and join with old. They then add the arch and corbels. You’ll need to paint too. Working with curves can be tricky so it may be hard to find a tradesman. Good luck.
