This or That: Carpeted or timber stairs?
Comments (78)My parents' old house had a wonderful oak front staircase that my six siblings and I used to race up and down, taking them two or three at a time, with only a casual hold on the railing. I don't know how we managed to never slip or fall. Now, the timber backstairs were steep, and had narrow treads and were poorly lit. We NEVER ran up or down them, but held tightly to the railing and hoped to heck we managed to stay upright. As an adult, my previous home had carpeted stairs, which I slipped on (wearing socks) and fell down twice, though thankfully I was closer to the bottom than the top. My current home has timber stairs with three narrow stainless steel runners stood on edge and inset horizontally across the front of each tread (this is supposed to help reduce risk of slips). I doubt I will get over the anxiety of taking another tumble, so I never go down them wearing socks, and if barefoot, I hold onto the railing for dear life and take it nice and slow. So far so good....See MoreHallway laminate flooring door jambs
Comments (6)Yes oklouise, understand about the skirting(now), I figured out the skirting boards technique after the fact, a little late I guess. Apparently it was one of the things missed at the local stores where the "advice" comes from the professionals. I was invited by one of the "professionals" to sit down at a table(where the apparent consultation happens for whatever project one has), and wasnt informed of that. Among several other things. He was very convincing though, I must give that to the "pro" at that supplier.(holme depo'). In fact, the "pros" at the local suppliers are like, I dont know, as experienced at these sort of things as I am at flying the space shuttle. I guess I could offer an astronaut advice that he/she try, "give a LOT of gas before take off, once it's in the air, try auto pilot, it will keep shuttle floating smoothly, eliminating the need for any button pushing till ya get back into earths atmosphere". But obviously I am only guessing at that. And I assume if I worked at the local coffee shop by the flight school, where I were to be around "flying" people, I'd possibly develop a knack for the language, then if I were to put forth the effort, I am sure I'd be capable of convincing(carelessly), anyone who stopped there for coffee that they could hop in a plane and fly, no problem. Especially if my job selling coffee depended on that. Well, that's the sort of thing the "professionals" do at the supply stores here; )lows, H-D, AZE, etc). Not to mention half are younger than anyone I've ever known to be dignified with the distinction of "professional". I would think time on the job doing the actual trade(flying) would be factored into that category. So, although I actually appreciate your advice, not really what I was looking for. But thank you for taking your time to try to help. It's just that I feel the "go to local supplier, seek the professionals" thing can be used for just about anything on here....See MoreDilemma bare hallway -so many different floor coverings- how to solve
Comments (5)Unsure how to cover this utility hall floor. previously carpeted, and ripped up due to washing machine leaks, heavy wear and tear, i did put new grey carpet in bedrooms 1 and 3 and formal lounge. the door shown is bedroom 2, needing to replace its carpet hoping for some sort of flow, but if its different oh well its guest room anyway. i cannot match the existing grey tiles. what can i do, it needs to not look odd with the flooring in family room kitchen and hall leading to portico front entry. I do not like the reddish laminate and its worn in some areas. do i replace all or some or is there another idea? walls will be painted grey with white trim. not a fan of existing beige . original thought was chocolate brown main hall, was told my house too dark. and doesnt solve problem of not wanting laminate near laundry, other thoughts - some sort of large white tlle? too clinical? terrazo with a greyish fleck to match wet area grey tiles- too modern industral? my style is perhaps Hampton without the beach (lol) family, pet, guest, grandchildren friendly, overstuffed sofa, lots of photos and fresh flowers. perhaps will replace wooden blinds with long flowy airy white. other pics show the new carpet -i love its texture, and the nasty reddish laminate. maybe i can leaver some and cover with rug? any ideas gratefully accepted....See MoreWhat wood laminate flooring color to use with honey oak.
Comments (2)If you were selling , are you sure you will recoup the extra $$$$ ? Get it wrong , and a potential buyer will walk and/or offer $50k less , whereas if you leave it as it is , they will know it needs replacing , offer $10k less , but you have gotten an offer ! Just me , but what I would do is rip up the fake tile lino in the foyer ( I assume it is lino -- it doesn't look to be 'proper' tiled ? ) , and do that in a darkish timber laminate -- slightly lighter than the front door , slightly darker than the stairs . Or go really dark -- almost a dark weathered grey or a similar dark brown to the drawer unit in the lounge -- the rest of the colourings will lighten it a bit , but it will all tie in . OR actually tile it , maybe a black or charcoal gloss marble or marble effect with lighter streaks through it ? The house and colourings look an older style , this continues that theme , but I feel white or beige tiles would look too bland . $2k max instead of $10k -- marble tiles may be more than $2k , but up to you ....See MoreCreate Perfect
