Personally I would always go for a consistent style throughout the house if at all possible. Expensive if you have to make a lot of changes to achieve it. I guess it comes down to how much it bothers you.

is there any profession in Australia that would have the experience to restore some scratched and some tarnished polished brass/gold door handles. handles are about 20 -25 yrs old and whole house needs a freshen up.. hoping there would be some business that can do this. might be cheaper than buying all new door handles etc

The clear lacquer coating has worn off. Brasso will clean it. But you will need to regularly do it as it will continue to tarnish. You could take the handles of and send them to a metal polisher who can strip them back, repolish and then relacquer
