I honestly don't think it's particularly unattractive. I like your idea for the wall. A climbing plant would also look good but that won't help with the view of the roof unless you add some trellis to the top of the wall if permitted.
I do agree with JE C, it doesn’t look too unattractive, I like your idea of the wall, you could add a beautiful water feature , a pleached hedge, but if you get your outlook from your doors looking fabulous I don’t think you will notice that roof , just a few ideas
I would paint that wall a dark charcoal colour and arrange a beautiful garden, with an emphasis on drawing the eye down or towards the middle as opposed to leading your eye 'up' the wall - think some nice mid sized flowering plants or interesting trees, birdbath, garden lighting or water feature. With the wooden framework in the foreground of your image, is that for an outdoor entertaining space? If so, I'm just wondering if it's worth placing some horizontal timber slats evenly spaced apart from underneath that beam to help prevent a view of your neighbour's roof unless you're standing out in the yard? I hope that makes some sense :)
consider a narrow verandah style pergola at least 2.5m tall above the wall (depth and extra support posts subject to direction of sun, climate, need for shade etc) the raised support could be timber or wires strung on steel supports (like that used for fencing) to encourage growth of wall covering vines, Virginia Creeper has almost covered our old brick courtyard wall in only 2 years and very glad we didn't paint or render the walls
