Getting a new puppy....Advice.....

So once we finally move in to our new home we will be getting a puppy :)

Hubby wants a German Shepherd or Rottweiler..but he's not going to win...because all my life I've wanted a Labrador :))

So my question is.....Who has a Labrador and what things do I need to know when bringing it home as a pup?

Being a new house and all, I'm a little nervous....and especially since all our Landscaping is now finished, I don't want him destroying anything!

Any advice would be great :)

Labradors are great, just don't teach them to come I the house!

Hey IG.... We have a german shepherd just coming out the other side of puppyhood... oh my lord! It was fun.... but I can't say I really miss it lol! Can't really give you any lab specific advice but whether you go lab or shepherd..... they will be an awesome addition to your home :) Our girl is super sweet, sensitive, loving, low energy (thankfully) as we got her primarily for seizure detection for our 2 year old son... plus she also makes for an awesome guard dog - doesn't bark unless absolutely necessary which is brilliant. Our 5 year old daughter called her Evie :)

Puppy school would be highly recommended as it may help you implement some basic obedience and also coping strategies if she decides to landscape your beautiful gardens with her own paws ;)

She's bigger than this now but this is one of my best photos of her.... sweet little munchkin lol

I agree with Billmore Homes paperbark is a very nice colour and goes well with Jasper http://colorbond.com/colour?Category=4969402186C2455AB302B1ECD6FE7176 The idea to use double strength is good for outside projects because the light can affect colour so much at different times of the day. Soft greys are back in fashion too so don't overlook Ironstone, Basalt and Wallaby( the web link shows what I mean by those colour titles) if you are stuck with the blue door it can be hard to coordinate with blue but you can alter its shade slightly by a freshen-up coat of the original colour or a tone or two darker or a few drops of black (and I mean drops) is amazing the depth it adds to a paint tone without changing the overall colour.

Hi Laura, I have been through the same dilemma myself. I could not find an option short of getting second hand doors. Sliding doors are, to me anyway, a poor option especially if they are used all the time i.e. your main ingress/egress. Given the cost of the windows/doors I have not done anything at this stage. I will later but I will ensure that I can have exactly what I want. If I was to put in something that was not I wanted I suspect that I would regret it. In the mean time I would be looking on the second hand market and see if there is anything appropriate. Bifolds and French doors look fantastic and will really open up the area. Good luck with it.

Hi kazzi18 Nice house, strong frontal appeal and typical of the period, I would not change the front with the exception of trimming some trees so that it can be seen slightly better. I think that what you propose is possible and the budget seem close. Here some things that you might like to consider: 1. To give it a required style I would do it by changing slight details to the front if change is required. The handrail has to meet the Australian Building Code (NCC) especially for height and minimum width between balusters. (Cannot tell from the pics that you posted). You may be able to amend it and keep the original - steel can be welded successfully if required. 2. To get your third bedroom I would do a number of sketch plans maybe from a couple of professionals - this will give you an independent view of possibilities - I think a good investment, and you are not tied top any professional that may have their own design agenda once you sign on the dotted line. There is quite a bit of information on your posted plan, dimension wise, you really need a few heights and some information of sewer and drainage all relatively easy to obtain. Then its just a matter of emailing a couple of Building Designers of your choice. Some photos of the side elevation will help in determining an approximate slope, you could employ a surveyor to do a site survey with falls and features (you would most likely will need to employ one eventually - especially if you are going to build close to boundaries or renew any fencing - should have your block surveyed so that you don't suddenly become noted by any surprises in relation to boundaries.) 3. When you are happy with your layout (Sketch Design) you can then employ a Building Designer/Architect/Drafts-person to provide you with documents for a Town Planning application and a Building Permit as required. In the long run you could save some money, by this process, and get your preferred outcome. I have done initial sketch plans for a few clients and it generally results in a fruitful outcome. 4. Both Bedroom 1 and 2 seem to be ample in size, however storage (Walk in Robes) are slightly small especially for a master bedroom. So reclaiming the downstairs space for bedrooms seem to be the way to go , you would certainly have to seal the garage exhaust fumes from such area and may be provide a new internal stair link to the main area. Hi Sue, I think the wall colour (white looks like an white/off white) is lovely. It’s neutral and light, and will be the best back drop for any soft furnishings. I would suggest maybe updating some of your furniture. Your sofas look in good condition, so re-upholstering to change the colour may be a expensive option. in a bid to save some money, perhaps updating your rug to a lighter/more neutral pattern/colour (look at armadillo rugs) is a better option. Also updating your dining setting (perhaps something with chair upholstery to compliment the sofa, and even a large light coloured marble top) to be more contemporary and in keeping with your lounge suite would be the way to go. My clients often find it difficult to part with certain pieces that hold sentimental value, but often a new home requires a furniture update. In summary, I’m not convinced changing wall colour will be able to link all your furniture together. Stick with one piece that works well (ie. the sofa) and work towards updating the rest. Good luck!

Puppy school is a must. You might not be able to prevent digging or chewing, but you can divert it. Offer lots of chew toys and praise when they are used. Have a clam shell pool thing filled with sand for digging and bury toys and treats. Positive reinforcement is the best training method, but sometimes a squirt with a water pistol works a treat too.

Labradors shed a lot of hair. My sister had one, she had to vacuum twice a day. Most dogs will dig if they’re not provided with enough stimulation & exercise. Puppies need a lot of attention, much like a baby.

I worry that an alternative digging style space with buried toys and treats may only encourage more of the same behaviour in other parts of your yard? We used other games, rewards and toys as a distraction. Puppy School said to help deter digging, plant dog poo or balloons under the soil as they won't want to be surprised with their own pong or get a fright - quick response but hopefully will discourage that kind of behaviour quickly. We do have a clam shell filled with water that Evie loves to splash and play in, lots of toys (that are put on rotation so she doesn't get bored lol), obedience training we continue for 5-10 mins every day (longer than that and they get bored)... walks, playing backyard cricket with the family (brilliant fielder!), and lots of cuddles with us... she gets a Doggy Day Spa (hydrobath, blow dry and deodorising treatment) once a month for an awesome price of $25 and she smells so beautiful and holds that treatment between visits.... thought about throwing hubby in after her to see if he would smell that good haha! The price was so good we thought once a month would be a great thing to continue for her. She gets chicken wings for lunch and a part of a beef neck bone to play with for a few hours and that keeps her teeth nice and clean and white. She loves playing tiggy/chasey around the yard with us and loves to play with my 2 cats - though they've never exactly rolled out the welcome matt for her - whoops! She also has daily chats with her neighbour woofa's over the fence and discusses the weather, days events, swap stories of food and treats, talk about people walking past, sniffing other dog bums stories and so forth and so on ;)
