Design Dilemma Kitchens

Kitchen Benchtop and Splashback help!

Hi, we are about to renovate our kitchen and are stuck on benchtop and splashback.

I've attached a couple pictures of the current kitchen so you can see the layout (layout will remain the same). So far we have decided on:

handleless gloss tupac white cupboards/drawers
bottom drawers around bench/below sink/stove etc will be matt black
black appliances
matt black sink and tap

We were thinking engineered stone benchtop and matching splashback:

Caesarstone Statuario Maximus™5031
Caesarstone Calacatta Nuvo™5131

Questions:

Do you think either of these colours would suit? Or is there another brand/colour that would work?
Has anyone had experience using engineered stone as the splashback? Or had a stone look custom printed on glass and used as splashback?
What splashback would you recommend?
Matt black cupboards/drawers around the bench, below sink, stove etc - will this look a bit missmatched? Or add a nice contrast?

Ceasarstone recommend that you do not use their products as a splashback behind a gas stovetop unless you have a 200mm gap between the edge of the stovetop and the splashback due to the heat. If you change to an electric or induction cooktop then this distance can be reduced to only 50mm.

If you are using a stone-look benchtop, such as the ones that you have mentioned, I would NOT go for a stone look printed on glass for the splashback as the reflectivity is higher with the glass and it will look fake. I would suggest tiles or a glass splashback that is a consistant colour, possibly matched to the veining of the grey in your benchtop which will complement your benchtop (which is the feature of your kitchen), and not distract from it.

Matt black tapware and sinks are very on-trend, and when the fashion passes in about 18 months they will start to look dated. Classic chrome and stainless steel is timeless, so your choice really depends on how long until you put your house on the market...

Hi there,

From the pictures it looks like your kitchen is very well maintained. If there's no major reason to pull the existing kitchen out, I would strongly suggest looking into a quote for getting the kitchen repainted just as another option while you're still in the planning phase.

Forget subways, really overdone & can look so cheap. The more grout you have the more cleaning you'll have to do. It collects grime ( known in the trade as 'grotty grout' ) & is hard to maintain. Go for glass, the possibilities are endless, from sophisticated plain to funky patterned. Easy care & long lasting. Personalise your space, it looks really fab, love all your drawers, so practical ! Would love to see the end result. Please post pics.

Ali your kitchen looks amazing. The colours are wonderful. I have a question for you about the Rugged Concrete. I’m thinking of using it on our island bench but I’m a little worried about finger marks and cleaning. I’ve read lots of bad reports about the other Caesarstone concretes like Fresh,Raw and Sleek. And I’m hoping Rugged Concrete is easy to clean. How is yours now that you’ve had it for a little while?

Agree with others. I have had black shiny glass splashbacks and that was an absolute nightmare to keep clean and shiny. Definitely matte, and careful with the tone of grey as some lean toward blue or yellow so you want to match the grey in your beautiful benchtops. Hope this helps.

Hi Again. I hope I am placing this in the right place. We have finally finished the laundry splashback so I am wanting to show photos particularly to those that offered advice before. I can't believe 4 months have passed since then. Between personal issues and the Covid we had to put on hold for a while. Anyway, we settled on Pressed Tine in a simple pattern which we painted gloss black. My only regret is the white switches and power points (as we never thought would go black), but hope to change that soon. Hope you all love it as much as we do.

thanks girlguides and neha - we are looking to make it more modern and the cupboard under the sink has some water damage...which is why we are looking to replace it.

I really like your design concept. what colour kick board will you run below the drawers?

also would suggest using a 40cm deep sink to prevent splash back

I would have countertop and backsplash the same, to me it looks more modern without having too much contrasting materials

NB - we will be having kickboards that match the cupboard/drawers. So under the bench, stove, sink etc will be matt black and everywhere else will be the white.

Irene Morresey - that's pretty much the exact look we are going for (except only lower area will be black, no upper...do you think this will still look ok?

What colour/brand stone is used in those pics?

Dr Retro House Calls - thanks for your comments! We are going induction so 50mm gap will be fine! And yes, good point about the glass splashback reflective - will look into the matching benchtop stone.

I found picture, but only said countertop is marble. It's quite a subtle countertop with not too much veining. If you showed pic to specialist they might be able to give you a better idea. I love the look
