Living Room Color Dilemma
Comments (5)Hello Emma-fleur, you are right, the red does emphasize the orange to does in the timber, which is not at all complimentary. Having said that it's an easy fix! Timber is still a natural tone, and you can easily reduce it's impact on your interior not by bringing in whitea and creams necessarily, as they will only high lit once again the orange tone in the wood, but try to introduce other materials and colour similar to it, therefore reducing their visual jarring. I mean that perhaps a sisal rope rug which has natural fibres and caramel colorings might help draw your attention away from the timber dominance, and introducing other mid toned timbers in hard furniture such as coffee or side table, mirrors or frames even lamp bases will actually tie into the timber, at the moment that is your feature which you are not happy with, so make a new one. Would keep a simple neutral palette across your soft furnishing,s sofas cushions and draperour both your drapes with a mushroom brown are lovely, and the chocolate ones make it feel a little more contemporary, and our roman pull down blinds are a good colour reference, as would be anything that must stay. Work with these permanent features rather than against them. I would suggest painting your walls a warm based coffee, to help mute the contrast of he kitchen cabinets and floor. Also, any cream or light clouded furniture that you fill the room with, will instantly standout as a lighter feature against them. As for colours, I would really lean towards natural tones, rather than colour. Tones are colours that have been affected by black, tints are colours effected by white, they are much more subtle and may include colours like olive greens, mustard yellows, or even teal blues, compared to their colored version of green, yellow or blue. These will compliment the natural textures in the materials you introduce. Good luck....See MoreAdvice needed on my brown living room wall
Comments (21)I'm surprised to admit I really like the brown. I usually don't like earthy neutrals of any shading but this one is ok, it certainly provided balance for the dark furniture the previous owners had. I love the idea of the side table at 90 degrees to the start of that wall to create a reading nook/dining space and redirect traffic. You could get something reasonable tall facing toward the glass doors to be storage/extension of the kitchen so there is a sense of connection. You could then put paint, wallpaper the back of that cupboard and put up the mirror and a little table for keys. Or even have matching bookshelves back to back and use the one facing the front door as a 'wet' room/shoe storage. Ikea sells so many great units that you can tailor the combination of size and shapes open and closed to get just the right look on each side.If you do this you have to screw the two units to each other so that stand straight and appear as one. If you did use the nook as dinning space you could have all the serving/special stuff in that cupboard so you dont have to go far for setting the table and leave the kitchen cupboards for daily use stuff. When I first moved into my big home from a super tiny apartment I just laid out what I had (plastic dinning set and all) as best I could and moved them around every few weeks till I got the combination of how to use the room right. Then I went and bought more/new furniture over the next 6 months....See MoreAdvice on my living room colour scheme please
Comments (33)It's just that the carpet doesn't sit nicely with the wall colour. You need some accent colour in there so your chair is fine but I would add or replace some of the cushions on the lounge. The artwork is over your head so bring that down to eye level and I would look for a new colour for the wall as that is the easiest to change. Hopefully you don't live in a too warm climate as the carpet is a warm colour and the toning the wall will add to the warmth. I realise that grey is very popular at present so my other suggestion would be a huge grey mat to cover a much larger part of the existing carpet....See MoreWhat are we doing here... need advice on combined kitchen/living room
Comments (6)I did a chuckle at the time. I know those moments! I also know people will ask you to post a whole house plan, which way north is, how many people in house etc. A complete house plan would give you much more informed answers....See MoreQuadrant Design Architects
