We are looking for a Japanese maple for a large planter box.

The huge variety of Japanese Maple has left us a little overwhelmed - so many to fall in love with. We have a new planter box approx. 1.2mt x 1.6mt we wanted to achieve the look of a large bonsai effect. We are coming to grips with the fact the weeping variety is likely to get too thick in foliage, we want to be able to see through the tree to what is on the other side (we appreciated the skeletal effect of the tree), so are now considering up-rights.
Do you have a favourite variety of Japanese maple for a large planter box OR in this photo do you know the variety on the left of the shot?
We have came across 2 varieties they are 'Acontifolium', research has shown it can have a very radical colour change lime green to bright yellow to vivid red but a blotchy effect, so much so the trees overall beauty may get lost. Another is Acer Shirasawanum "Autumn Moon", more subtle in its colour change from lime green to softer orange, seeping in from the edge of the left.
Any wisdom you would like to share in choosing the right variety would be appreciated - thank you
