Thanks for those photo's, I'm thinking about shiplap cladding and shelves in my toilet and photo 4 confirms that contemporary style floating shelves will look great, I was a bit worried that I might have to add Federation style (house is fed). The shelves would be on the opposite wall to loo and I hate seeing rolls of toilet paper but they have to be in reach so thought a simple shelf with sliding doors (finger hole in doors no handles) above the loo would work and also provide a place for a plant on top underneath the window. That tiny room has been causing me so much stress! Oh I have a metre high half Zebra easy peel wall sticker (to keep small grandson interested whilst on the job) on wall opposite loo which is contemporary, another reason I wanted the shelves above it to be a bit modern. I think it will look great now, even adults love the zebra lol. Thanks again I'm totally sorted.

I think they look beautiful. You'll need to think about placement so they are not located where your grandson might be tempted to climb up to reach them or even try to climb them, but so they don't look wrongly proportioned for the space. I think shelves are a great idea for photos as you can change them around without all the hassle of measuring and redoing wall hooks, although I have to say I also love a well designed photo wall. Are you wanting to combine photos and other display objects on the same shelf or use specifically photo ledges with a groove for the frames? In the walk-in robe I'd guess you might have various possible solutions apart from floating shelves? dreamer is right, proper installation is the key. You need good quality shelves attached to studs. I've seen shelves advertised as suitable for attaching to the sheeting but with the proviso that they have less weight capacity. I'd go for attaching to the studs, which means finding them and hoping they are in a position which suits what you want to do. Which is why floating shelves are still on my 'to do' list.

Thank you everyone, lots of food for thought. oklouise, would you have the false wall going all the way along the bathroom or just jutting out behind the vanity? We have a few cm to work with as the vanity we are looking at is a little narrower than it could be. jacqueline thank you so much for your photo! Something that goes down a bit lower might help disguise the pipes, ours will be a much smaller room than yours. siriskey, I have attached the plan for this room to see if it is helpful. I am leaning towards choosing a different vanity but as you have said this one is lovely! But it won't be lovely if it doesn't work...!

A couple of things I'd do -- I'd do a teak mantlepiece , to tie it all in . Either the same thickness as the shelves ( looks 25-30mm ? ) or double that . Also , I think the TV is wall mounted , but I'd go higher -- my opinion is that there should be a 30cm gap between the mantlepiece and the TV , or go 'halfway' so theres approx the same distance from the TV up to the ceiling as there is down to the mantlepiece . Again , just a personal preference , but it's best to be looking up a bit , and have the TV angled slightly , OR have a low TV cabinet and sit the TV on it .
