Renovation: skirting boards and cornices?
Comments (18)I have a conventional concave cornice and I get plenty of cobwebs in the 10mm step out from the wall plaster (but not so much the step out from the ceiling plaster, or maybe it doesn't show so much there). If you are replacing the ceiling I would go with a shadowline rather than square-set which will show every wobble in your plaster or paint. I don't think it is feasible to install a shadowline into an existing ceiling (which will usually have a ragged edge under the existing cornice) but I could be wrong......See MoreSkirting boards and other trims ...

Comments (7)I don't know that there are any rules as such, but I always envisioned the skirting being bigger than the cornice and archs. You could get away with square set cornice and hampton's style skirting (see pic), but i'm not sure if it wouldn't look a little top heavy with the large, detailed cornice and small square skirting...But of course,if you like the look, it's your house, so do what you like....See MoreNo skirting boards with carpet
Comments (17)Hi AW my photos are only two. The other four photos are from houzz. I search bedroom in Perth. As we still build with concrete slab and double brick walls over here in the west. Gradually changing to other build types. In WA, You have to specifically ask the builders over here to install skirting boards if you what them. They are not included in the normal build. 5 years agoThanks for your input annb1997. I've attached some photos of our house. We're going for a beachy industrial feel, I suppose....
The ceiling are 2440 in all areas except in the kitchen/dining area, where they are raked, as you can see in the photos. Thanks in advance for any input :-)

5 years agoYou didn't mention your spectacular honey-coloured plywood ceiling which is a beautiful feature. I think that stained timber skirtings and architraves will detract from your ceiling, especially as they will be a different timber, colour and look to your ceiling. You have white walls, you have white windows, why would you introduce a contrasting timber element in the form of an architrave? The only answer is to paint the skirtings and architraves in the same colour as your wall, so that they "disappear". The concrete floor, the timber ceiling and the raked ceiling have enough visual interest and you don't need any more.
