No skirting boards with carpet

Hi, I‘m renovating a house which will have concrete floors on the main level and carpet on the second where the bedrooms are. I wanted a clean modern finish and have decided no skirting boards where the concrete floor and wall meets. I know you can get ones where it’s flush into the wall, but because I have brick walls, I can’t do it. I was just wondering if having no skirting boards with the carpet on the second level will look any good, to keep it consistent with the main level. My builder has made a nice clean edge and says its not necessary and will look fine, but I have never seen carpet without skirting boards. Any suggestions or ideas about carpet without skirting boards? I know the purpose of skirting boards, so please no comments on why I need them. Just asking for a design/looks perspective.

Hi!

Is your second level also brick? or plasterboard?

Part of the reason for skirting boards is to protect your walls. Your vacuum cleaner etc will dent your walls if its plaster.

Hi Luke. Thanks for your comment. Upstairs is mostly brick as well.

Hi Lucy Have you thought of using the same colour on the skirting boards and architraves but doing them in high gloss? That way they will look slightly lighter than the wall due to the light reflection off the gloss.

The skirting boards in pic are a meranti type colour as are the doors and architraves. Hubby does NOT want to change the colour or even consider white. Besides carpet what type of flooring could we lay that would still tie in well?

Thanks so much for the comments. It’s literally cutting & installing the skirting boards only (no architraves) and we are providing the boards already painted (5.4m lengths). It will be a clear run as it‘ll be right after the new floors are laid so no furniture around at all. Quite a lot of angle cuts though. Still reasonable? I suppose it comes down to peace of mind on a quality job or take a punt on a handyman (unfortunately don’t know any so would have to take a chance). Oh dear, wish the budget wasn’t so tight otherwise I wouldn’t hesitate.

Builder wants to save money, Scotia is the cheapest option, trying to "manage you " with flood, as previous comment. In case of flood All skirting will be removed. However check the width of the skirting board specified, Builder may fit 40 x 18 mm MDF or timber as skirting

Hi AW , we have no skirting boards. This is fine, no issues. We have had skirting boards in our other homes, and all I seemed to do was dust them. This time I decided not to. We have concrete floors with brick walls. Thanks.

If your home is a hamptons, federation design theme, then that adds to the appeal. But, if you don't want them, I would recommend not installing. It saves extra cleaning and extra money .

Practical issues/concerns aside, whatever you do try tp be consistent with these finishing/detail decisions. No visible skirt is fine, but having no skirt + a cornice can feel unbalanced or "top heavy". If you're shooting for super clean minimal finish ideally you need to also follow suit with the other related threshold/trim detailing similarly. You can do a flush p50 (shadow line) skirt detail to but it is expensive to do all round every door & window. It can also look a little clinical. Another option is using square profiled slimline/thinner skirt/architrave material (say 12mm as opposed to 18mm) that can give a more streamlined contemporary vibe. There's no wrong or right, but there is balanced and unbalanced. Good luck Cheers PD:)

Wow dreamer, that looks great! Thanks for giving me examples of carpet without skirting boards. I tried desperately to find some online and got no where. I think I will be making the right decision then to not have them and keeping everything consistent. Thanks again, your photos are very helpful.

Hi AW my photos are only two. The other four photos are from houzz. I search bedroom in Perth. As we still build with concrete slab and double brick walls over here in the west. Gradually changing to other build types. In WA, You have to specifically ask the builders over here to install skirting boards if you what them. They are not included in the normal build. I think the look is fine.

We have a cornices 55mm classic look. I think that it looks fine.
Personal preference strikes again. Not a skirting to be seen. Who does the dusting in your house?

You don't need skirting boards, we used to have 2 bed unit in Sydney built 70's it didn't have skirting boards and was carpeted and from memory the door frames were flat metal. The ceiling was the difficult bit with it's plaster swirls

Siri, I used to have one of those units as well. Popcorn ceiling, no skirtings, and metal door frames.

How are skirting free walls achieved? I'm asking mainly in relation to preventing rising damp since my plasterer said the gypsum needs to be detached from the floor to prevent it from spoiling.

Actually floors are tiled and the plasteter used an underlying layer of plaster or Paris (I'm not really sure what it is but was mainly calcium sulfate based.) This is a Mediterranean house built in limestone blocks. I was wondering if filling the gap between floor and plaster with lime would work or if it would just result in a mess, again due to humidity and cracks, as time goes by.

In your case, then installing skirting boards is the correct thing to do. It allows for expansion and contraction of floor with walls.
The examples posted in this post in 2018, are for new builds, of concrete floors and brick walls, not limestone buildings.
