for safety's sake the glass behind a stove needs to be expensive splashback glass that usually comes in colours..check on line Hardware for prices and contact manufacturers direct for specific advice for clear glass installation over tiles
I think it could look a bit bulky having the two layers. If you really love a particular range of tiles and your kitchen bench top has a corner - why not have a glass splash back along the potentially messy area and the other wall in the tiles you love (with the glass splash featuring one of the colours from the tiles?). If there is no corner, a glass or stainless steel splash back could be used behind the cooker and flanked by the tiles on each side.
So I've seen glass splashbacks with customised art on them, photographs and that type of thing, and I'm wondering, if you want the look of tiles and the ease of maintenance of glass, is it possible to get a glass splashback customised with your choice of a tile-like pattern?
Yes, it would get quite bulky having the 2 layers. Glass also offers a different texture (smooth and shiny) to the tile which will have texture due to the grout lines. This could look a little odd if the tiles continue past the glass. If you're worried about staining the grout, ask your tilers about epoxy grout as this is nearly stain proof. Also, being new, tiles are much easier to maintain than old tiles and old grout. A simple wipe down after each use should do the trick.
Otherwise, you can customise the art as (previously mentioned) which is usually printed to on the back of the glass or you could use a wallpaper behind to give the look of tiles. It's a little complicated to do but we have done it before .
